I can't find the right thread

I am about ready to put this little jewel 240D back together. The head I bought on Ebay is really used and abused I think, so I am having my head checked for flatness and I am going to use it because it was just gone through. I am taking the whole cam assembly from the Ebay head and will transfer that to the head I have.
I was told the engine was locked up and wouldn't turn and I assumed that to be the case and never tried. Sometimes we neglect to go that extra step and regret it. I am sure now the engine would turn over. The cam broke on the sixth lobe, but that lobe could still lift the valve. Lobes 7 and 8 came to rest with the lobes "up", meaning valves were down and the little engine shows no damage. So I should have turned it over and set it in a good position for dis-assembly, the usual number 1 TDC and on compression. But I didn't and now I don't know how to set if for re-assembly.
Now to re-assemble, I will set the #1 at TDC and install the cam with the lobes up on number one and the mark on the cam lined up with the line on the tower. But then what do I have to do to set the IP. Will do the drip test when the thing is ready, but how do I get it close. Can you tell me or show me the right thread. Thanks.

Sounds like you were in very very bad need of a Factory Service Manual. If you were in the US the $27 that it cost would have paid for itself by now.

I also would be nice to know a least what yer 240D you are speaking of.

Assuming a generic 240D enigne and if you are alredy at Top Dead Center you would rotate the Crankshaft Clockwise 1 full turn; that would put you at TDC on the Exhaust Stroke.
You would continue to rotate the Engine clockwise until you get to 24 Degrees Before Top Dead Center.

On the Drive end of the IP Front Bearing Retainer at about 11 the O'clock position is a little timing mark. Rotate the splined Drive Gear Clockwise until the spot with 2 missing splines (teeth) line up with that 11 O'clock mark.

Carefully stick the IP in (with gasket or seal on) so that the adjustment slots on the IP mounting flange are in the middle of their adjustment range and just snug up the nuts/bolts.

If you are still on 24 degrees BTC you can Flow Time the IP. There should be enough room on the adjustment slots for you to rotate the IP to Flow Time.

Sorry Diesel911

I just added it to the signature section, it is a very well restored 83 240D 4 speed that I got from Nate in Florida. He restored the car,(inherited the car from his parents who bought it new) had the engine rebuilt, but in the process of putting it together, he forgot the three screws that go below the cam sprocket in the head and cracked the camshaft. He put the car away in his garage for about 6 years and I bought it from him this fall. I do have the factory service CD's. I just find them extremely long winded and kind of hard to deal with. Maybe I should spend more time with them, but really I much rather prefer your way of telling it. Thanks!
