Vacuum Related shutdown.

I cant afford to take this car in right now, Can someone Tell me where to look for the Vacuum leak? I was told look in the area by the brake assembly and the vac lines by the I.P... None of these hoses are broken, and the rubber Joining them is not bad... There's one Vac point that's broken, ( I think Going to the Trans judging by the shifting) So, what am I looking for, Is there some sort of shut down module that can be replaced or what specific vac lines do I need to look at, This is a 1987 300TD. Thanks for the continued input !

Fix the broken vac point to the transmission. That's where I'd start. If the system is leaking more vacuum than the pump can create, it won't shut down.

Also check the vacuum shutdown actuator. Put a vacuum on the modulator and see if it will shut down the engine. You do have a Mity-Vac, right?

I dont know where the Vacuume Shutdown actuator is, what it looks like... etc. I have the Suck point to the transmission sealed off until I can replace the fittings.

I'm not familiar with that engine, but there is a "stop box" located on top of the IP, should have a vac line orifice sticking straight up.

it should be the brown vac line going to the rear of the IP. Hook your mity vac to it and it that shuts the car down you have a leak somewhere else. Most likely the line that controls the door locks. I think that is yellow. Plug that and see if the car shuts down. Golf tees make great plugs.

oops! I did not see 1987 but the method should be the same. Mine are 123 MB

If there was a vac leak in the doors, wouldnt that cause the locks not to function? All of mine do when I lock one, they all lock..

I understand the door lock system on a 124 is independent of the engine system, just like on my 126. The 124's have a number of electrical motor driven vac systems.
If you find the "stop box" there should be a hard vac line going to it, on my cars it's brown.

that is correct....it may not be the door system that is the culprit. I would try the mity vac on the shut off valve anyway. it may be the ignition switch since the vacuum for the shut off valve is routed through the switch. There may be other places you have a leak. disconnecting and plugging different lines is a way to diagnose where the possible leak is.

I have a 1985 300 TD and have found this to be helpful:

I traced the Vac lines... there is a Vac line to the white Fixture on top of the I.P. there's a bundle of Vac lines including a brown one that pass through the partition and into the firewall, I took off the lower dash (huge pain in the tukus) and Tried to trace the lines through but cant see where they go except in the general Direction of the Tumbler for the ignition, The brown Vac line has a lot of play in it verses the other lines that pass through the same bundle... looks like I'm still going to have to take it in....rats...

You need a vacuum line routing diagram. Might make your job easier. Should be one in the archives somewhere for you model car.

The ignition has two lines going to it, a brown one and a brown with a stripe, so you're on the right track, I think.

I cant get to where they are in the dash, you are correct however, There's another bundled with it and it goes off in another direction, but 2 go up to the ignition. I'm too fat and un-nible to squeeze in there lol
