240 D fuel filters

I checked the diy section and didn't find anything. Looking for a step by step for changing the fuel filters on the 123 240. Thanks!

That'll be the same as on a 300. A clear primary inline filter, fuel lines on either side with clamps.
Then the spin on filter, when reinstalling fill with something that can be used as fuel, you may not need to prime at all.

Very simple. The first filter (clear plastic one) is just held in with hose clamps. Loosen those and pop the old one out and replace, tighten. Second one (looks like a small oil filter) has a bolt that holds it in place from the top of the mount. It screws down into the filter. I think is a 21MM. Loosen that, have something under the car to catch any diesel (or try) and discard. You can, at this point, fill the new filter up a bit with diesel. It'll help speed up the prime process. Replace filter. Tighten down. Then loosen up the 17mm banjo nut that holds the return line on so that the system can bleed. Start pumping w/ the manual fuel pump (directly below the 1st fuel filter). Pump until diesel comes out of the banjo nut you loosened. Your done.

My spin on, or secondary, filters have 24mm bolts, they also have an "O" ring or two on the shaft. If you have a crush washer just under the bolt, you'll have to replace that too, not all engines had 'em.

If you want to save yourself potential head ache, change your filters while the engine is nice and warm, it'll fire up easier

Thanks! I guess there's no way to tell about the O rings or the crush washer till I've taken the filter out...better ask Phil.

If you have the one with the Aluminum Crush washer you can see it under the head of the Filter Bolt if you inspect closely.

Most likely you have the one that uses 2 different sized O-rings. While they can be reused several times you should have the O-rings before you start the job just incase.

If you reuse the O-rings they may not leak until several weeks later.
