?Rod bender?
1994 sd 3.5 Is this still a rod bender? How can i tell if the original engine has been replaced? I know i have read here that the engines on some of these were replaced by MB and there is a way to identify the replacement engines but a search turns up so much on these that i would be reading for a week.
TIA Don

3.5 = rod bender.
You can enter your vin number on the Russian site and see if your engine serial number is the same as the serial number listed. This can't tell you if engine was rebuilt, just replaced.

Look for a tag light is on the bellhousing:
Finding a tag like that means you have a rebuilt motor. How many miles are on the odometer? -Jason

Why would the tag say "original mercedes benz" if it had been rebuilt. The transmission in my benz has a tag that said that. Does that mean that the old 617 i my car was 'rebuilt'? Why would they put a tag on the transmission if the MOTOR was rebuilt???

Where on the bellhousing should that tag be located? can it be seen from under the hood if it is there or would i have to get under the car? the mileage is about 130XXX. Thanks Don

Aguy I know who has one shipped his car back to Germany and when they took apart the motor, some things were toast. They gave him an Austauschgerat/Aggregat because they rebuilt the motor using some of the parts which were from the first one (like the injection pump, which is serialized) and redid all the others. I have seen them replace a block, use some components and attach this tag PLUS the original motor number Tag. They used to run these cars on the repair line at the plant where they were originally assembled. If any of you know Scott Monthery, this is what his uncle had done by Mercedes. I know because I translated the 42 pages of paperwork for him. Bottom line: if you have one, it's an AUTHORIZED replacement done by the book, assuming it was taken care of afterwards.
