Why is Antifreeze so complicated?

Do I need to add anything extra to Zerex G-05® Antifreeze? It doesn't actually meet ASTM D-4985 for diesels.

A PO put in green antifreeze and I'm planning on doing a flush and fill during a block heater install and I'd like to do it right.

It can be complicated for OUR cars because they put metals into different sections which can make the others corrode...
so it is very important on our cars to follow the rules...

Just be careful not to overtighten the radiator neck clamps when you do it....

To answer your question, I believe the answer is no. Also, if you haven't bought antifreeze yet, the OEM mercedes stuff is actually slightly cheaper than G-05 if you buy it from Phil.

Don't know if this was included in your question, but you'll probably want to mix that antifreeze with distilled water, 50/50.

...and getting more complicated - in a good way.

Zerex is a step ahead of some others relative to the "Bitterent Law" that's being debated in many states...Here's a cut/paste from the most recent notice to Valvoline (Zerex) distributors.

October 28, 2009

The Valvoline Company
3499 Blazer Parkway
Lexington, KY 40509

To: Zerex and Valvoline Customers

The states of Tennessee and Washington have passed regulation that antifreeze products manufactured after January 1, 2010 must include denatonium benzoate (bittering agent). Antifreeze products manufactured before January 1, 2010 without a bittering agent may continue to be sold. Also, the states of Vermont and Virginia have passed similar laws that will go into effect January 1, 2011.

Starting in July 2004, all Zerex antifreeze products produced and shipped by Valvoline have included a bittering agent.

ASTM D-4985 is not applicable to all diesel engines. Zerex G-05 meets the specifications of ASTM D-3306, which applies to automobile and other light-duty diesel engines and does not require the use of additives (SCA's).

It gets worse. In the shop where I work, we have GM products using Dex-Cool, Freightliners and Western Stars using some kind of purple stuff, and other vehicles running green coolant. I'm not sure, but I think some of our Powerstrokes may be running the Ford gold coolant.

The good news is you can mix green with purple (says so in the Freightliner book), the bad news is that you don't want to mix Death-Cool with anything or it gums up the whole system.

I was so uneducated about coolant a few months ago. I had green that the PO put in. I ran low and put in some of my brothers dex-cool. Not enough to gum it up, fortunately. I flushed that **** out and put in the G-05. I read that it's the same formula as mercedes stuff.

Hey, it's hard to go wrong with OEM. I hate to sound like a newb, but who is Phil?

Click the "buy" parts link at the top. Phil's the gent that runs the whole system.
