84SD with 320K showing on odo. Front suspension clanked and squeeked and clanked, side shift in turns from trailing arm bushings, four nearly bald tires, with soft drink spills everywhere. Yet the engine ran like a top and shifted fine.
Best advice.............go to an indy, who knows MB diesels, and get a pre-purchase inspection. Tell him you don't mind a project but want a good base to work with.

I bought my '83 300d with 303K on the odometer. Didn't hurt that the PO had maintenance records going back to 1983. Aside from the transmission that I'm eventually going to have to replace, it runs great!

My SDL came with 290K on a very slow odometer (1 mile would register for every 4 or 5 driven) Now that I replaced the stripped gear in the odometer she shows 326500 and climbing.
The 81 SD had only 180 on the clock when I bought it. I put another 100K on it...

When I graduated from college I got an '84 RX-7 Wankel and decided to sell my '81 VW Rabbit Diesel. It had 370K on it, driver's side door welded shut, totalled twice (rollover, rear-ended). Sold it for $200 and it still ran like the day I bought it. Had very little maintenance other than new glow plugs and regular oil changes. The shifter bushings were gone and I was the only one who knew how to shift it.
I miss that little car. I wonder if it's still going?

450,000
I purchased a vehicle with over 400, 000 miles on it. Paid too much for it too, but that's just how I roll!
I travelled half way accross the country, BY BUS, to pick her up too! She had the motor, tranny, and differential rebuilt. Interior looked nearly brand new. New tires and Brakes. I got her for a WVO conversion. I love her (to death). She's white (only draw back) with a beautiful tan interior. Runs like a top on diesel and even better on my heated WVO. she has 464,000 on her now, still going strong.

high mileage
Wow,
looks like I have had the highest miles MB posted on this thread so far. A few years ago I purchased an 87 300TD wagon for $1000. It had 573 thousand miles on it! it was aparantly a service/delivery car for an MB dealer in CT for most of its life; I think it was called Carriage House. The car had some serious power! It ran like a top. No doubt some serious maintainence was kept on this. Rear suspension was shot, and so I had traditional shocks from another model benz fitted. Ended up riding like a stiff truck. I sold it a year later. An unfortunate event ended its life before it could reach 590k. Something happened with the battery. It exploded and started a fire uder the hood. RIP Sometimes i am more concerned with low mileage diesels that with higher mileage units.

318,200
Just bought my '85 300D turbo in Nov '09 with somewhere north of 318 on the clock. Has some issues but runs solid enough to commute 47 miles one way daily. I have just over 322k today.

I guess my new 300D 2.5 with 260k(ish) miles is my new record for highest miles at purchase.

My first Mercedes was a $400 1980 300SD W116 with 390,000 miles. It was owned by a Mercedes-Benz Club of America member and had a rebuilt transmission. Other than having rust bubbles from the salted Utah roads and was repainted from the original yellow-beige color to a cheap silver-grey color, the car was immaculate. I figured it was a disposable car until I heard that these cars last hundreds of thousands of miles and the fuel mileage was so good. Being a first-time Mercedes owner and it having the typical climate control and power window problems, I got discouraged and sold it on eBay for $600. I ended up missing the car so much that later on I got a 1979 300SD and learned how to fix it the right way.

I was going to say 36 mpg with the '87 190D.
But I see everybody talking about the number of miles on the car, not the fuel mileage. The '86 300SDL I bought had 312,000 on it 7 years ago. It now has 320,660 (I only got it running this year)

Yes, 100K miles would have been the point I would not buy one. Now since I can afford to buy them new, I would not buy one with over 30K on it's clock - since I bought my sig. diesel new. Last edited by Skid Row Joe; 01-16-2010 at 11:36 PM. |

Just purchased a 84 300SD with 396,544 miles on the clock. Original owner lover this car. Always garage kept, afraid to drive in snow, If the car got a sniffle it was immediately sent to bed. What ever the shop recommended it got. Came with service records to day one. The owner was quite elderly and stopped driving. Had the service people sell the car for him. $4,800. Can. With a mint body and very sound mechanical. Everything had been done.
