Ok, So far, after all of these years, I have avoided having to use the chassis number to order a part.
I need to know how to find the chassis number from a 77 300D vin 132 12 040668
and a 85 300sd.
Looking at these parts

but some are the same part as listed for the 85. IF I can use the one from the 85 I will.

On my 1983 300D, the chassis number is listed in the Mercedes Benz Service Manual Library CD as being found under the hood right in the middle of the engine compartment (on the firewall). Not sure if it is the same for the 77, but maybe it helps.

Your chassis number on the '77 should be W123 130, and maybe more digits aafter that.
