What kind of scanner should I ask Santa for?
I would like to get a scanner to have on hand to help with upkeep/repair on our cars. I would like it to read and reset codes on OBD2 vehicles. The cars I currently own are my 99 E300, a 99 Chevy Suburban Diesel and the 02 Dodge Grand Caravan. I don't know much about scanners so thought I would ask others what they use and why.
Thanks, Mike |

Isn't it cheaper to just have autozone read the codes? Various auto stores sell scanners....
The caravan will probably just break and no longer move rather than throw a code, that is what ours did.

The autozone readers wouldn't work on the F-250. The guys on the ford forum suggested autoenginuity that hooks up to your laptop. It has tons of features that I haven't gotten around to. For basic analysis, it is pretty straight forward.

pawoSD, sure it's cheaper to go to autozone, but I NEED (0k want) one! I hear you on the Caravan, we will not be buying another Dodge any time soon, unless it has a Cummins in it.
TchTchr, I'll look into the autoenginuity, thanks. |

I bought a ScanGuage II about a year ago ---- It has a lot more functionality than just reading codes. http://www.scangauge.com/products/

I bought one of the laptop code readers for my newer vehicles, ScanTool.net, reasonably happy with it, in the base form, it will give you real-time readouts of sensors (like O2, etc.), but for more functionality, spring for the upgrade software, ( no matter which brand if you decide on this type), I should have at the time, but talked myself out of it.

What do you mean the AutoZone scanner won't work on the F-250? I scanned a 7.3L dually not too long ago. It read it fine.
