Tank screner O ring size
Morning,
Late last night I got down to the big nut on taking the screen filter out on my tank. I didn't have a socket big enough. After church today I will pick up a socket & O rings. What are the sizes of the O rings & and does a 46mm convert to about a 1 13/16 socket? Thanks. Hugh Sr 1984 190d (W201) |

113/16 is very close, a new tank screen has a new "O" ring on it, but your best bet would be to take the old one to an auto parts store.

You should be able to buy the O ring alone. I reused my tank strainer after cleaning it. I bought my O ring from a MB dealership for $4. I would think that auto parts store might have a comparable O ring design.

While I bought the socket below becaues it was cheap (1-13/16"); it has too much radius on the edges and would only partially grip the Tank Screen Hex as it is not so thick.
In my case I have a belt sander and will grind that radius off so I can get a better bite on the hex. But, you could just find a socket that has less radius; I believe that 6 point sockets have less.

I had no success in finding a socket *anywhere* so I ended up taking the whole tank out of the trunk and then using either vise grips or maybe a pipe wrench on the stupid thing.
