How to Repair Power Steering leak?
I beleive I have a power steering leak. I did and search and came across this thread. My car is 1984 300d.
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=263927&highlight=power+steering+line However my leak is at the second connection in the picture, where it appears to be metal on metal and some sort of clamp connecting the two metal hoses. What is the best way to go about repairing this? Any recommendations on the correct part to purchase? Thanks. |

uhhh, nothing in those pictures has anything to do with P/S. P/S system is totally contained between the resevior near the big screw on fuel filter and the steering box directly in front of your steering wheel. No part of P/S comes close to the oil pan.
If you are seeing red fluid from that hose, it is transmission fluid.

Yeah, that seems to be your transmission cooler line.
Item #20 in the pic, maybe. Not sure exactly where the leak is, you're going to have to try and follow it.

Thank you. This is my first MB and I have only owned it for 3 days!
The leak is 100% coming from the location at the Red Arrow. That "fitting" is rusty and crumbling. Any and all tips of what part to purchase and tips on installing the correct part with be hugely appreciated. I am not so handy, at all, but I want to tackle this if its reasonable for the newbie mechanic. |

That item is part #019 997 80 82 looks like you may want to get the proper size flare wrench. Check other areas under the car for a rusty situation too.

Thanks again.
When I enter that part number in fastlane, I get a double female ended spring wrapped line. It does not look the same at all. Is it possible an upgraded part? EDIT: On Fastlane there is also and upper and lower transmission cooler line. It looks closer to these two parts, but not identical. Last edited by Pappa G; 11-30-2009 at 12:38 PM. |

That hose replaced part #019 997 70 82. The spring wrap is a reinforcer/protectant. You'll have to inspect what have to see if it'll work, otherwise you may need to replace item #10 as well (#123 270 46 96) I can't locate that hose which has not been updated, call Phil.

Guys, take a 2nd look at where the Red Arrow is pointing.
The Red Arrow is the last one on the Right. It is pointing to a clamp that holds the Steel Tubing. If it is leaking there the Steel Tubing itself must be leaking.

I agree, I've replaced one of my hard lines due to grommet under the clamp allowing the clamp to damage the line. The flex hose also appears to be in tough shape. I would clean up the whole area, remove the clamp and see if you can pinpoint the leak.

I looked around a little I am unable to find a part number for the tubing.
You will need to go to the Dealer, or go to the parts tab at Fastlane and on the left side you will see how to contact Phil. Also what side of the Engine is the leaking tubing on? There are some DIYs on replacing the tubing.

I have had it happen and seen it happen on other vehicles. On the ones I have experience with vibration caused the clamp to cut through the Tubing. But, the poster said it is rusted so that could also be a cause.

That picture is almost identical to my car exciept the leak is clearly coming from where the red arrow is. That metal hose is basically split in half. Moreover that "clamp" is rusty and falling off of the connection.
This is on the passenger side of the car. You can see it easily just looking right past the front of the passenger side front tire, without moving anything, right next to the oil pan. The upper and lower transmisison cooler lines don't look quite like this on fastlane. I am exhanging emails with phil, but he sent me the same diagram as above. I need to give him a call. Thanks for all the suggestions. I need to research some of the DIY repairs for sure. |

That car came with one of two transmissions, my previous pic was of a 722.4, this is of a 722.3, same part number for the left and right sides as previously stated.
