93 300d 2.5

Looking for a 602 engine for my 93 300d. Anyone got suggestions?? I bought the car knowing it had a bad engine.

I've thought about installing a 83 617 engine that I've got. (Spare) Is that even possible? I haven't done any measuring yet.
Anybody got any intelligent input??

I would sure try to find a good OM602 to drop in. Having owned both a 617 and a 602, I think the latter is a more refined engine. Seems to me it would be much less work to replace with a like engine, too. Have you posted a WTB thread in the parts classifieds? Engines are out there!

Yes, I posted a WTB today. Thanks for the input. I was just thinking worst case situation I would try to drop the 617 in. I've got two 603 engines and it seems as though the 602 has about all the bad habits that the 603 has had.
Thanks.

Stick in the 603!!

The 617 won't mate with the 60x transmission.

Truthfully, the 602 transmission is not the same one as on the OM603, but they will bolt together. Sticking in a 617 will be more weight and if it has a turbo, the 617 is only a little less power. With the 603 you can probably use 300E springs if you can't find '87 300D parts, but having a junkyard or parts car with a 603 would make the swap pretty easy as all of the accessories move right over.

Or, find someone who will trade a 602 for your 603.

The 2 603 engines are in cars. The 617 is my spare engine, that's why I had thought of trying that swap. But, if the tranny won't mate up then thats that. I wouldn't think the 603 would fit in the 124 body.
Thanks.

Fits

The 603 will fit fine in a W124, they came in 87's in North America , and in later vehicles elsewhere in the world. I have one in a greymarket 91 300D from Japan. Cheers Dan

Ok, thanks for the link. That's over my budget for a new eng. My hopes are to find a wrecked car or etc. and go from there.
Thanks for the info.

Yep, that is the price. I bought my 617 from them 2 plus yrs ago.
The price today went up from then.

He did give me some slack since I picked it up.

Long block, valve cover to oil pan, new GP, rebuilt IP and Injectors.
also Vac pump, turbo drain tube and dip stick.
I drove to LA and picked it up and dropped off the boat anchor, $6000 out the door.

What's wrong with your engine? Are you sure it's not rebuildable?

There was a running 617 powered 124 on eBay some years ago so it can be made to work.
