Anyone know if I can use a steering box from an earlier 115 or another mercedes chassis of the same generation asmy 1973 220D?

Probably yes. MB used the same steering boxes for decades. Compare bolt holes and linkages. The number of turns lock to lock will give an idea of the gear ratios in it which might vary depending on what it is in.
