Talking Going back to Rotella...

For three years now I've been using Mobil1 5W40 TTD.
2 jugs(4.4liters ea.) @ $100 bucks and $14 for the filter.
Ya, little change from $120 DIY oil change, every 5k km (3k mi).
I'm going back to Rotella 5 gal pail $75.
I'm not seeing the benefits of M1.
Car has 360k KM burns 1.5 lites every oil change.
What do you guys think?

Your numbers are AFU on the M1 costs.

Nothing wrong with the dino Rotella if you are not in a cold climate.

I normally buy M1 5W40 for $22/gal at walmart. At worst, you can buy it for full retail of $7/qt ($28/gal).

There's nothing wrong with Rotella either.

I suppose Toronto might not sound cold to you guys, but it seems like Rotella dino will be a little thick for at least the dead of winter there.

$42.99/gallon (canadian)?

Yikes. At least use Synthetic Rotella 5w40, 15w40 is extremely brutal on an engine at low temps....the stuff is like molasses....

I buy Synthetic Rotella for $19.99 a gallon.....its cheap enough, and works great in the cold.

Rotella T Synthetic 5W40 - $20 gallon minus one buck with my AAA card at NAPA.

Good link on motor oils to use for diesel passenger cars. I realize it is a TDI enthusiast's site, but there is still good info nonetheless.

What's considered excessive oil consumption with the [3.5L] OM603.971?

Any reason for the 3000 mile oil change interval? You can get an analysis done to help you determine how contaminated your oil is at that time. At those prices, I'd be looking to do this
