The Mer-Chevy Project

This guy is taking the engine out of a 240D and putting it in a S-10... hopes to get at least 40MPG. Probably a little optimistic but should be interesting to follow along! http://bit.ly/6IdoOS

That's like strapping a Rolex to a monkey

plus it should have been called "Chebenz", but whatever.

Stimpy, You've got a point there. However, I often need a little pickup to ferry general crap from point A to point B and I've dreamed of such a combo so many times I can no longer count. What I'd really like is to find a nice Toyota pickup from the early 90's with a toasted mill.(I know, I know. They never die!) Slap a 617.952 in there and you'd have a great crap hauler. The turbo may intrude on the inner fender but there is plenty of room to use the BFH method to free up a nice nest for it.

AHHH! It's in my head again.....

I could get behind the Toyota idea. There's the VW Rabbit truck as well, but that has the whole "El Camino stigma" built in. The S10 is just a POS, no matter how you slice it.

What about an older Jeep J10/J20/Gladiator truck? Now that would be cool.

Perfect candidate for $950:

I've got several 617 engines if anyone has a project in mind.

Another one.

Keep on hoping. I bet he will be lucky to get 25 to 28 MPG.

Thats and early Willy's jeep truck. Pull everything but the frame and body and have a go at it. The J10 and J20 trucks are way way too big for 125 hp. I like the idea but to make it work well would take lots of time and money. Stock or close transplants are one thing. Mix and wont match is a completely different project. Thanks

El Camino stigma? I resemble that remark...

Good Luck with your project, I bought my 2nd 300SD for the very same reason. I was going to use a full size Chevy PU reg cab 2X4 truck and use the MB motor/trans combo. Keep us post on what your doing and good luck.

That is what America was built on, thinking out side the box.

Doc.

I don't remember the member or the details but someone here put a MB diesel engine in a old (40-50's) pickup. That seems better - you'd have a larger bed.

lutzTD 12-09-2009 02:44 PM

40 mpg with a 61x doubtful. why not use a 190D engine or a 300SDL engine and bolt on a 5 speed. then you might get closer

flash123 12-09-2009 02:59 PM

didn't somebody say 240D
great little naturally gasperated 4 banger, 65 HP downhill
I would go along with the suggested "forget the 240 and use a 5 cyl turbo"

don't get me wrong, I love my 240D I just don't expect too much from it

The best part is that Chevy will get 40 mpg and go for a million miles!
