Had an interesting conversation with my Dad. He always thought my '84 300d looked ratty. After I put new paint on it last month he seemed to have a new appreciation of diesels. He had just got his '91 Ford out of the shop $1100 lighter, saying the repairs will give him about 6-9 months breathing space to find a replacement used car.
Dad: I'm thinking of getting a diesel.
Me: What make?
Dad: Mercedes.
Me: Like mine?
Dad: Not like yours, yours.
(I didn't see that coming)
Dad: I gave you a car back in 1976, you owe me one.
Me: That car was in terrible shape, it wasn't even running.
Dad: Let's not make that mistake again.
(I didn't see that coming either)
So unless things change markedly I will be in the market for another mercedes diesel. Since I am a Canadian and can't import any diesel from the states which is newer than 1991, I appear to have limited options. A replacement 300d or a 300cd (they are pretty), a 300 with a six cylinder or a 2.5 liter. I am canvassing your comments good and bad about each one of these models. Also what state would be the best place to find and purchase one of these? Thanks, schooner.

First off, good job converting your dad. I think it will be a long time before I ever get my dad in a diesel. I live in Virginia and I find that mercedes diesels are usually rust free and cheap!!!!!!!!! I know of a spotless 84 300sd with 150K for 5500 in DC area. For some reason there's not a huge love affair with diesels in my state. Check it out, let me know if you want me to keep a look out
