Presuming you're talking about the o-rings..........absolutely...........they must be tight on the screw............if they are loose and not firmly contacting the body of the screw...........that's your problem.

Well, if it's the right filter, I'm perplexed on why my car does not run.. I'll try new O rings and maybe I'll get lucky....

to update, I've bought a new filter and O rings. I'll keep the new old one as a spare.

Rubber Washer

Earlier you said you had a rubber washer in addition to two rubber "O" rings. Have you verified there should be a rubber washer on the bolt?

I have a 1987 300TD and the filter bolt does not have a rubber washer between the bolt head and the filter housing.

Could the garage that changed your filter have added this rubber washer onto the bolt?

I use MANN WK317/3X fuel filters.

If it's not the secondary filter, it's most likely an air leak somewhere else... The fuel system is losing its prime.

I'd suggest going over everything between the injection pump and fuel tank. Check all the connections, condition of the hoses, check the 'clear' lines in the engine compartment at the secondary (they seem brittle, I'd look for cracks). How's the primary look? There should be a smallish bubble near the top, but no bubbles flowing through it (if there are, you can get an idea of where the air is getting in).

I took advantage of the shops offer when they told me I can see the underside of my car, I did look at the fuel lines. they are intact and in good condition. as stated before, this problem did not arise until the primary and secondary filters were replaced.

Since you've cured the problem, the proper thing to do is to close out the thread and let everyone know the solution.

Sorry, this thread got buried in the time between the solution etc...

What I did was Replace The secondary Fuel Filter and the o rings again. I inspected the secondary and there were a few defects in the main body of the filter near the rim where they crimped over the Receiver ring that the bolt goes through. I took it back to the place I got it from and got my money back, for the part and labor of them installing it. The car has sat again for all of today without being run and the primary filter sits full of fuel and I dont have nearly as a hard time getting this car to run as I had before. Which leads me to believe I still have a glow issue which I will tackle when I redo the injectors. The only thing left to do is to Repair all the Vac leaks under the dash and replace all the pods that control the Vents systems etc. Thank you for all your input on this matter.

I have another question in relation to this past issue.... is there some sort of check valve that is somewhere near the filters that keeps the fuel in the system so it Cant leak back? or can one be installed?

87 TD got towed.....again....

Well, I watched my TD get towed...again... I was Driving up a very slight incline, Lost all power, had the accelerator floored car still Quit, Would not restart for anything.. Any new ideas on what it can be? Has a new pre-filter, new Spin on filter, new injectors, Delivery Valve seals had over 1/2 tank of Diesel, no accessories running (wish the heat had been running) Car started normally for once (no chugging or missing) It Quit yesterday but restarted fairly Quickly... I'm at a loss to know what to even think of now..
