new to me 82 300SD doesnt heat up!

air gets lukewarm at best with heater on high, and the temp gauge doesnt even get to 80. i discovered a seized fan clutch, and removed the fan to see if there was an improvement. it got slightly warmer during a 20 minute drive but wasn't really a big difference, surprisingly. just a note- i'm in denver and its pretty cold outside, so i wasn't expecting a huge difference. i checked to see if the thermostat was stuck open but it was not, maybe it's opening early? also with the fan switched to high and the defrost on, (or any of the settings for that matter) the heat will blow for a bit and then if i go over a bump or hit the brakes it sometimes likes to just shut off. the blower sometimes comes back on, but because its been really cold out i dont have the patience to wait so i just keep pressing buttons for about a minute until it decides to start working again. it just seems like it will work for a while and then gets a mind of its own! any ideas on this?

also the blinker stays on after i've completed a turn, how do i fix that?

the Control head for the fans can be a pain, I struggle with mine, you can find one at a pick n pull or salvage yard of your choice if you want to try and replace it. my suggestion about your heat issue is to change the thermostat. your car should get to 80*c in a decent amount of time, Also you may want to check your coolant level just to be sure.

I have never been happy with the heat output in my SD in very cold weather. By very cold, I mean roughly 10F or lower. I get great heat after about 10 minutes around 20-32F. 10F or lower it takes a long time to get good heat.

Things I do in the winter to get the best heat-

Unplug my monovalve
Block the radiator with cardboard
Wire my Aux Water Pump to a switch to circulate the coolant for heat when I want heat

The fact that your blower sometimes will turn on with the push button unit but sometimes will not is a sign of a bad push button unit. Try pressing defrost. It shoudl default to full heat.

Things you can do-
Gamble and try to solder your unit. Most likely marginal results.
Gamble and buy a 'working when pulled unit' off of ebay.
Buy a TRUE rebuilt unit and know 100% that it works. Ebay rebuilts don't count. Most likely they did nothing, perhaps the tried to solder the cold connections themselves.
