Below headlight panel
Thanks to all the helpful information on this forum, I successfully replaced the dim headlights on my 1987 300TD. The new DEPO glass headlights are a huge improvement and now I feel safe driving at night. They also look much better than the old ones with the yellowed plastic lens.
During the replacement, I removed the headlight wipers as they did not work and I would like to replace the panel below the headlights with a blank panel without holes. Does anyone know the part number for this panel? The local MB dealership says they cannot find the part without the part number. I cannot locate a part number. Thank You, Rick |

Sign of a bad dealer
I'm sorry to hear that your dealer's parts people refuse to help you. That is one sign of a poor dealership. They have access to the Electronics Parts Catalog (EPC) right there on their counter. It is pure laziness on their part to refuse to look up a part and they do not need the part number -- that's what EPC is for. Asking for a part number is their way of getting rid of you. Pity.
You can access EPC yourself for free. Just go here and sign up. It is free for US residents only; that is why they ask for a credit card number, to confirm residency. The filler panels are listed under 124.133 (your car) and then section 88 "Attachment parts" and then 015 "Front fender." I bought those blank panels for my '87 a year or so ago. The part numbers (one left and one right) are 124 889 05 63 (left) and 124 889 06 63 (right). In January 2007 they were priced at US$14.50 each (YMMV). The panels come in primer only; you have to paint them to match your car. I found that it also helps to put a strip of X-pel or similar plastic film on the panels once the paint has been thoroughly dried; it prevents rock chips. The car looks great with the Euro headlights and the new filler panels. Much cleaner lines and less busy. If your dealer still refuses to cooperate, order them from Phil. Jeremy

I would order them from Phil and take them to the dealer and show them the part you were seeking.

Jeremy,
Many thanks for the info on the EPC and panels and the quick answer. I just now joined the EPC and was playing around with it, this will be a great resource for parts information. My car is a 124.193 but uses the same panels under the headlights as yours. Thanks for listing the part numbers, I eventually found them and verified on EPC they were for my car too. Your car looks great with the new lights and panels. Great tip to cover the panels with plastic film. Where does one obtain the matching paint? I went to the dealership because I received a $50 gift card from them that says it's good for parts. They may have obtained my name and address from the Mercedes-Benz Club of America that I joined last year. Very interesting that they could have looked up the part for me but didn't bother to do so. They said I had to tell them the part number before they could order it for me. Today I rode in a 2001 Benz. When the owner saw mine he said "You have one of the good ones". Apparently he's had many electronic problems with his car. I'm amazed at the lighting improvement due to converting to the European style. About 100 yards from home tonight a deer ran across the road in front of me, I'd have barely seen it with the old headlights. Thanks again for all the assistance. Rick |
