What's the true mpg of a 1992 300sd?

This guy on CL, shows a 1992 300SD, saying it gets 28city/40hwy. 6 cylinder

My guess is, this guy's lying. A lot. My '91 300d gives 36 hwy, and the SD is a bigger car, bigger engine.

I'm guessing being towed, maybe he gets 40 mpg. The EPA figures shown on the internet aren't right. For my car I think it shows 32 mpg, when I get more. It shows 18/22 for the 300sd.

1992 300SD

1991 300D 2.5

The new "updated" MPG ratings are for people who drive like...well, fuel's cheap! If you drive reasonably, with a light foot, anticipate stops, etc, you'll be able to achieve better than the rating (quite easily). 28 city / 40 highway sure sounds like he's just added 7 or 8 MPG on to what's actually possible. I probably couldn't get over 35 MPG in my stock '87, and it's a smaller car...

You shouldn't even be looking at a W-140 with a diesel. The risk with the 603.971 engine just isn't worth the price..........whatever the price.

Add to that the electronics and HVAC gems in the W140 body and you have a real winner

Unless you have documentation that the engine was replaced the price of a 3.5l diesel should be very low.

22-27 mpg

My experience is 20-22 around town, ac on, short trips (3-5 miles). I have seen 25-27+/- on highway trips, 70 mph, with AC. You might hit 30 with no ac and driving slower.

There is an instantaneous mileage guage on the dash that will swing up and down depending if you are coasting. That will hit 40+ if you coast on the highway for a moment or two.

He is lying about 30%. So, based on that, ask him what else is he lying about? I'm thinking it is his asking price.

Make him this deal. You will pay him the percentage of his asking price equal to the real mpg percent of his stated mpg. You fill the tank, he pays. You drive, you fill again, he pays again. You do the math. If the car gets 40 mpg, pay him his price, you'll be happy. If it gets 23 mpg, pay him your price, you'll be happy.

I have to disagree: after awhile they ALL get about 40-50 miles per gallon.
Of oil........
