Hood Removal

Has anyone removed a hood on a 300 SD? When unfastened can 2 people easily carry it.
I want to take into the shop to replace the sound pad, too cold in the garage for the contact to work.
Thanks.
PS where do I post home made tools?

there should be 2 bolts on the hood supports on each side that hold the hood on. if 2 people are strong they can carry it. If not. get a third person,

me and my roommate carried the hood from my 83 without a problem, we are both decent sized, but not super strong or anything.

Aluminum Hood

There's a good chance your SD has the ALUMINUM hood.
(Check it on the underside with a magnet)

The Hoods are so "UnGainly" that using two persons Minimum for R+R is a VERY wise choice!

you can do it with one person. all you need is a blanket to cover your fenders and windsheild so they don't get damaged during removal. carrying it's another matter. it's a proven fact SEC hoods are easier to carry (they are, after all, aluminum, not steel)

Sound a bit drastic to remove the hood to glue the sound pad. I did the 300SDL and 190D with the hood in situ. Can you wait for warmer weather? It is not something that needs to be done immediately.

As for removing the hood, there is 2 bolts with clips to hold it in place. Spray it with WD40 for easy removal. Make sure you protect the windshield with a flattened card box and blankets, and blankets on the fenders. It is really a 2 men's job for R&R. The last thing you want is to break the windshield, it happened.

Ditto on the strong people, I'd add make sure they have decent reach with both arms.

ALSO, tape your hinge and hood overlap and draw witness marks, then slice the tape leaving some on both, to make reinstalling it quicker. I put mine across a body shop sawhorse and used the 3M in the black can 'high temp superior adhesion' or something like that. I put some pieces of scrap wood and whatever I could find to weigh down the pad in the contours while it dried - ZERO flap or sag.

Is the SD hood really that much bigger/heavier than the 300D? I had no problem removing the hood on my 300D, I think my wife helped me. The hood has some hooks to hold it onto the hinges even with all the bolts removed. You remove 4 bolts, lift it up off of the hooks and carry it away. We laid it on a couple of padded sawhorses for the hood pad operation.

I think aluminum helps but big and bulky was the main factor.

I just replaced my 85SD hood. Stand hood straight up. Disconnect wiring and washer hose. Remove clips holding pins in. Tap pins that hold hood to hinges out. Have a friend help. It will make things easier. Pins are not the same length. Note which pin goes where. You won't even have to adjust if you don't mess with the hinges. I'd wait for warm weather and leave the hood attached. Pad can be installed with hood vertical. There was a post within the last month describing procedure.

Easy hood removal

Place a cardboard box on the the engine/breather. Careful with the linkage. On the pass side arm wire the latch so it cant slide out. The dr side cant move when the hood is straight up. Remove all four clips. Tap out the pins on the rear arms on each side. Now pivot the hood down onto the card box.
(that was easy) Next remove the forward arm pins with the hood resting on the box. The hood is aluminum and weighs 60# or less. One man can do the job to this point and could carry the hood as well if he had a 7' reach. Get the wife to help.
About thirty minutes to get it off and into the shop.
Doing the job on the flat has a lot of appeal especially when using contact cement and tucking the mat into the slots around the edges was real easy. Get some waxed paper from the butcher to place between the parts. With the pad in place, slip out the paper. Done. Three hour job.
