starter motor issues 87 190d

when i go to start and turn key,starter motor spins ,after a few tries,starter motor engages and all is well,seems to do it more when car isfirst started after sitting for a while.is this mean new starter motor needed?

What do you mean by spins? Is it spinning but not making contact with the fly wheel?

starter solenoid or a bad battery with not quite enough voltage.

by spinning i mean that i can hear starter motor whirling but not engage ,yes solenoid seems a possibility.is it hard to change?ill check diy links

That's solenoid or the bendix drive on the nose of the starter. Pull the starter, and see if the shaft sticking out past the drive gear is dry. If it is, put a couple drops of light oil in there. Set the starter nose-up so the oil wicks into the mechanism. Make sure the gear moves freely, and then re-install.
