tranny problem

I have a 1983 300D turbo, automatic. When I put the car in drive or reverse it doesn't move right away, there is a long delay. I push the pedal and the engine just revs. When it does move, it moves slowly. Prior to this it was driving but had no power at all. I diagnosed it to be a vacuum issue.

I have replaced the engine vacuum lines and the 3/4 way T's. I also replaced the yellow check valve, the vacuum tranny damper/dashpot (000 304 02 34 green check valve), the vacuum central plug (it was dry rotted), and the 2/3 way valves and flippers on top of the valve cover under the black lid. I have a new tranny vacuum modulator but have not installed it.

Any thoughts?

I doubt that it's anything simple like vacuum. Either low working pressure for some reason or one of the bands is broken or not actuating for some reason.

Was this a sudden thing or has it been getting slower to "pump up"? How many miles on it?

Rick

Besides overlooking the obvious (fluid level, etc..). Search or go to the Resources section and look for B2 piston.

Check the bushings on both ends of the shifter linkage under the car. When they get old they fall out which causes the lever on the trans to not get put into the proper place to put it in gear. Also check your trans fluid level. And you might think about a fluid and filter change.

Does the B2 control reverse also? I thought it was just for first gear. Haven't worked on mine yet, but have been studying the procedure. Please enlighten me on that one.

Correct. The B2 is only forward gears. There is another band more forward in the transmission (toward engine) that is adjusted by an external screw IIRC. Tightening the screw will decrease the time it takes to engage to reverse. Do a search on this site, there is bound to be a topic on the B3 adjustment screw.

I respectfully disagree. There are no external adjustments on the OP's transmission (the 722.1xx has the reverse band adjustment). There are only B1 and B2 bands and they are adjusted internally using shims or different length struts (as it says in the document).
