3-4 flaring shift.

I've replaced the B2 and K1, and now my 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are nice and firm. Fresh fluid and filter. Is there a kit for getting rid of the 3-4 flaring?

One would think, after six years, that you'd provide a vehicle model with the OP.............

did you re do the high speed clutch as well ?????????

it also helps to know what 722. what ever it is

Howdy Bio, I'm pretty sure you are way ahead of me on this one, but here goes: When I bought my wife's 300SD a few months ago, it had a terrible 3-4 slip. Probably why the price was so reasonable. Got it home and gave the Bowden cable a couple of turns and it shifts like a dream. I really expected to have to do more, but that's all it took. Maybe you could be so lucky.

IF had he not said he was inside the unit and NOW this happened, that was not their before, i would agree

BUT you are correct not enough pressure is also a cause and can be corrected it that way

Will this also cause the transmission to stack the 2-3 shift??? I have one that is only in 2 for an instant then 3 and slips into 4??????

Robert

Sorry it's in my 82 300TD.:o

The B2 was done before I got the car, I just did the K1 and fluid and filter changed yesterday. Prior to the work yesterday I had bad flaring on the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts. It's was really bad when cold and would firm up when warm but still flared. After the K1 the 2-3 shifts are nice and firm, but the 3-4 is still flaring.

Mr. John Schroader I've adjusted the bowden cable before but it was for hard shifts, because the it was shifting too soon, maybe I have it adjusted too far the other way, but I feel like the shift points are pretty good. But maybe I'll play around with it a little.

Rule of thumb is the modulator controls the firmness of the shift - with the use of vacuum the least amount you have the higher the pressure will be hence the crisp shift

the cable (Bowden) controls the when it shifts - connects to the gas pedal and is depressed < cable is pulled outward controlling pressure as well

having said that they both control pressure in the valve body from 2 different directions so to speak --jz

Superior shift kit K722A-D.

no its an internal issue not a DIY

BUT you can go and turn up the modulator pressure a bit and let the trans shift a little later, - than maybe you personally would not like the length of delay on shifting and it just might cure the flair

its a used car lot trick it does not infer its all better but it will give you more / driving before it due for a re build < letting it slide around will wear it out in a hurry -- jz

I disagree a valve body performance kit after the fact is not going to cure a high use unit - its usually done at a rebuild

more pressure might help it not flair

layback40 01-02-2010 08:05 PM

Bio,
These people have a kit with about a dozen springs in it. Depending on your problem, you replace the appropriate spring. There was a thread on here about it a month or so ago. Hopefully the link will not be blanked out.
Good Luck!!

Kindly explain how the K-1 kit improved the 2-3 shift. The Superior Kit does the same thing for the K-2 accumulator which is involved in the 3-4 shift.

My personal experience with the Superior Kit has been highly satisfactory.

More pressure from the accumulator is precisely what the stronger springs in the kit deliver.
