Slave/Master cylinder replacement

1980 240D (123)

I need to replace the slave cylinder and while I'm at it the master cylinder as well.

What is the best way to relieve the pressure so I can replace the cylinders?

I'd remove and plug the delivery line from the brake master cylinder reservoir to stop fluid from running into the clutch master cylinder and then remove the line at the slave cylinder and pump the clutch to empty the system as much as possible.

What pressure?
There is none, unless you are stepping on the pedal.

Thank for the clarification on the pressure. I'm a total newbie with this car. (Although I'm finding this car isn't as complicated as it seems)

My other concern is that the slave cylinder leaked brake fluid around the transition. Should I be worried about any corrosion and if so how do I clean it up to avoid any problems? The inside of this car is suspiciously clean. Not even a drop of oil anywhere. I would hate to see something like a little bit of brake fluid cause serious problems in the future.

Also, if I'm going to be draining some brake fluid out would it be wise to just replace all of the fluid? If so what is the best way to do it?

Some Facts About Brake Hoses:
#1. The average life of a brake hose is six years.
#2. Brake hoses deteriorate from the inside as well as the outside.
#3. Moisture is absorbed into brake fluid systems through brake hoses.
#4. Contaminants in brake fluid act abrasively on the inner wall of brake hoses.
#5. The brake hose reinforcing fabric deteriorates through expansion and moisture.
#6. High operating temperatures contribute to the deterioration of hoses.
#7. Brake hoses swell with age and restrict flow.
#8. Generally all brake hoses on a vehicle deteriorate at the same rate, So all hoses should be replaced if one is found to be faulty!
