Difference???

I am looking at a 1984 and 1985 300d. I saw last week that some of you "Indy Car" types were taking your cars out and running them to 80 or 90mph. For some reason it looked like the rpm's on the 85 that was submitted was much lower than the 84's. What is the difference between the 81-85 models both in the d and sd models? Looking for powertrain differences on

Yes, it's normal for the '85 to show lower RPMs than the earlier model years. In 1985 MB changed to a numerically lower final drive. The torque converter was given a higher stall speed so that the same amount of acceleration (term used loosely...) was available.

Don't know that I'd prefer one over the other. The '84 and earlier models turn about 3500RPM if you drive at any decent speed. But it'll last forever being driven like that, so...

I would think that the 1985 would give slightly better fuel economy.

Didn't the '85's also have different or reworked transmissions?

It seems that there are people who feel that either the 1983 or the 1985 turbodiesels were the best year. I have a 1984 SD and its 126 chassis has needed several things. But the 5 cylinder engine itself, has been utterly reliable, and it gets a nice growl at highway speeds.

My '85 is more complicated under the hood than my old '83 300D and my uncle's '84 300D. Seems the intake manifold is different with some device on it, alot more vacuum lines and solenoids and stuff, I think mostly for emission control.

Thanks for the replies! After reading turbodiesels reply I was wondering, since their are more emission controls on the 85', are the 81-84 models more powerful?

I hear the '85s are supposed to be faster, but mine has 472,000 miles on it and the engine may be a little tired. But it still ain't no slug!

Yeah, John's 300D is pretty fast for the miles! We compaired our cars one afternoon and his actually felt faster than mine... (I have like 1/3 the miles!) Maybe it was the tires? I dunno, but his car is very comfortable for those kind of miles.
