what heads are interchangeable

I have a 1987 300sdl with the 3.0 inline 6 diesel 603 engine with the #14 head. it is cracked and was going to pick a part and not sure what other makes will have the head that will work on this any help? would be deeply apprecaited. I am a new owner of the mercedes and i am learning more then i want to on these.

Sorry

I hate to tell you this, but there is no other "make" that has a head that will work on a 603 engine. There are a number of revisions to that #14 you have, and I think they are all preferred to the #14, but it must be a 603 engine head and if you are lucky enough to find one, you should have it checked out.

Are you nsure the head is cracked? I am not trying to stir up an argue ment but there are more than a few people on here that have a #14 head with 200k ++ on them.

positive in three places, i wish it wasn't, but they are very visible. they are on 4, 5, 6. is it possible to have the head welded and reseated?

I would try the pick and pull 1st. There is a company out in Cali that specializes in MB motors and heads. If you were going to keep the car I wmight drop a refurb head on it. BUT you are talking about $2k for the head

The later the vehicle model, the more likely that you'll get a later head casting.

Also the 1991 350SD

Note that the 1990+ cars cylinder heads have different prechambers, injectors, injector lines, and I believe glow plugs too.
