617 Noise

Hello everyone,

I was hoping someone could identify this noise that I have on my 617. Hopefully its clear in the video. I will post another video of my other 617 that does not have this noise.

Clattery 617

Non-Clattery 617

-The nozzles on the injectors are relatively new. Replaced mid fall of 09.
-Oil level is good
-It has been sitting for a while

-I did notice that the return line connecting injector 3 and 4 is heavily saturated.

-A fair amount of vapor comes out of the oil cap hole when the cap is removed.

-Apologies about the video, it was taken on my camera and I had a small memory card.

Thanks!

It's hard to hear noises on internet videos unless they are overpoweringly loud. I can't hear anything out of the ordinary. You might describe what you are hearing, so we can pick it out a little better.

Well to me, it sounds like a loud clattering around the #3 cylinder. It might have something to do with the #3-#4 return line being completely saturated.

That sounds like a normal car to me. I remember someone else posting a while ago about some weird noise. In his video the engine sounded normal as well.

Try getting a mechanics stethoscope and pin pinpointing the sound that way.

These videos are not as helpful as I thought they'd be. The sound is much clearer in person. Even in comparison I cant tell the difference.

All I'm hearing is a little nailing. I would replace the fuel line, maybe you have a small air leak.

You could try cracking open the injector lines one at a time to figure out which cylinder is making the noise.

The only thing I can tell from the videos is maybe some nailing, otherwise completely normal.

Alright here is a much better recording.

It was done with a Shure SM58 wireless, so at a few points it will cut out (the other 617 was parked at the bottom of the driveway and the base was inside the house)

The first part of the video is the good 617. The second part (you'll hear it start) is the one that is making noises. The recording was made at the same height and in the same area (right above the IP aimed at the injectors, panning across left to right)

Sounds like a bit of nailing or maybe not-freshly adjusted valves. My dad's 300SD was making a similar sound until I did the valve adjustment....then it went away.

Yeah, that was my first suspicion... I'll have to do a valve adjustment on it as well as replace that one return line.

I didn't think that a return line could cause an air leak. Is that right?

Shure SM58 eh?

Nice microphone

Mine sounds exactly like that. I am out of adjustment by 50,000 miles. On the list of summer todos.

50k?! I'd be adjusting those ASAP! I've seen them go out of adjustment in 15-20k easily! You'll end up damaging something if you don't get that taken care of....

SM57 would've been a better choice for this application.
