OUCH! The $139 bolt!
Ok, it's not exactly a simple bolt, but... The center mounting bolt for the main fuel filter on my '95 E300D. It has the shutoff knob/valve, and 2 O-rings. For whatever reason, my old one started leaking after a fuel filter change. I tried a second fuel filter with another set of new O-rings, no joy. Fuel leaking from under the knob, it appears.
I called Phil expecting $20 or something for a new one. Wrong! $139.00! After agonizing and living with significant diesel smell and small puddles for a few weeks I sucked it up and ordered it. All better now, no more leak. But sheesh! Rgds, Chris W. '95 E300D, 305K |

Yikes. I'd have tried a trip to a junkyard before spending that much money for a bolt.

'95 E300Ds are rare enough on the street and I've never seen one in a junkyard. And there's no guarantee a junkyard valve wouldn't leak too. But I agree with the concept, one should at least look around before spending that kinda money. Maybe someone on the forum is sitting on a spare.
One of the reasons for the price is that the '95 OM606NA engine is a one-hit wonder. The '96 and later cars that use the OM606 do not have that valve; Mercedes went back to the plain bolt. Jeremy

Could you give us the part number? I'm curious to see this bolt.
I wonder what makes it so special (expensive).

I did scout around for a used one, and Phil did too, but no luck. As noted, not too many 95's floating around in the junkyards. I don't have the part number handy, because I ditched the packaging, etc. and the invoice I have from Fastlane only gives a SKU of 6010700546 - I don't think that's an MB part number but I don't know.
It's part 23 on the fuel line drawings which can be found elsewhere on the Shopforum diesel board when air in the lines of 606's discussions come up. I just tried to attach the drawing to this post, but it won't let me as I've posted that drawing before (?) Rgds, Chris W. Last edited by Chris W.; 01-18-2010 at 03:25 PM. |

I guess a thin copper washer wouldn't have done the trick?

its $139 because of the machine work involved to make it.
