Grouchy Neutral Safety Switch
So the original Neutral Safety/Reverse Light switch in my 240D bit the dust. I got a new one the other day and installed it. It works alright, but jeez is it finicky. I usually have to jiggle the shift lever a little in park and neutral to get it to gap the switch. Reverse seems to work fine. I've tried adjusting it with the panel thing, but the switch has such a small range where it makes contact.
Is there a trick to adjusting these things? Do they break in over time? |

Did you check your shifter bushings for wear? they get loose, and or fall out, then the shifter doesn`t move the lever for the NSS to engauge, or the transmission into park.

X2 for bushes. Also make sure the plug is good & clean and the pins are tight in the sockets.

Hmm, the bushings seem alright. Though they're cheap enough and this is aggravating enough that I should just replace them.
The plug is a-ok. I ended up refurbishing the whole thing after the plastic crumbled. |

They are pretty much plug and play. Been a few years since I did my 85, but as I remember I removed a plug, some screws and put it back together.
here is what it looks like. http://www.allpartsexpress.com/ShopByVehicle.epc?q=1987-MERCEDES--BENZ-300tdt--/--L6--998cc--3.0l--Diesel--Fi--Turbo-Electrical&yearid=1987%40%401987&makeid=MERCEDES+BENZ%40%40MERCEDES+BENZ%40%40X&engineid=1194353%40%40300TDT++%2F+L6%2D2998cc+3%2E0L+DIESEL+FI++Turbo%40%40300TDT&catid=Electrical%40%40Electrical&subcatid=Neutral+Safety+Switch@@Neutral+Safety+Switch&mode=PA You will pay quite a bit more for one if a shop replaces it for you. mark up on the part, and probably one hour labor. the shop I sometimes use is up to $117.00 hr.
