85 300SD Motor Mount replacment cost?

Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone knows about how much they have paid for motor mounts replacement? Or what is a reasonable price? I will probably supply the mounts. I am thinking of having my mechanic change them soon. I can tell one is bad for sure because of a primer pump leak that leaked on it.
But since they are original I will replace both and maybe the engine shock(s).
I am just concerned about cost? Thank you.

Probably a couple hours of labor for a good mechanic. It took me much longer but I was a newb and was doing oil cooler lines, engine shocks, and a bunch of other stuff all at once.

Did you fix the primer pump leak?

You could increase your skills and change the Mounts yourself.

It really isn't that hard (I know 'that hard' is a relative term). The toughest part for me was getting the holes in the motor arms to line up with the bolt holes that pass through the motor mount after I had the new mounts on.

Motor Mount Replacement: 300SD

You can do it. Tools might be an issue. I needed:
  • socket wrench
  • 2 extensions - at least one that is 12 in.
  • torx head adapter (I used two different sizes) for the socket wrench
  • swivel elbow (to reach the allen bolts closest to the motor)
  • 19mm box wrench (...I have a set harbor freight ratchet box wrenches that made the job a bit easier)
  • 17mm box wrench
  • floor jack
  • 2X4 -- about 3 ft long

The do it yourself instructions in the peachparts wiki are for a W123 work pretty well as long as you understand that you don't need to remove the upper mounts for the engine shocks on a W126.

Being an amateur this job took me about 4 hours. Next time it'll take about 2-3 hours. It's not hard - just time consuming.

Just remember to do the worst side first, DO NOT slacken BOTH sides, if you do that the motor will lift, and not rotate, you want it to rotate to get clearance to put the new mounts in.

engine hoist is preferable to a jack underneath, if given a choice, but it is a dead easy job once you have cracked the upper bolt on each mount, two 17mm combo spanners use the ring on the bolt, and the ring of the other in the jaw of the first to get more leverage, 8mm hex for the lower, for a W124.

Watch out the notch is lined up right, and keep your hands and fingers away from being crushed if the lifting gear slips / settles.

Here is a DIY article
http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/OM617MotorMounts

I would recommend to take it to a DIY car wash, and blast both sides clean of all grease and grime. be sure to blow out the crud in the 2 6mm Hex heads on each side of the motor mounts.

Job isn`t all that hard, more time consuming. plus you will invent some new words .

You are probably looking a $250 in parts (+ -), 2 mounts, 2 shocks, and maybe 2 upper shock mount, and maybe 2 lower shock mount kits. then 2 hrs shop labor or more. @ $100 an hr.
most shops don`t like parts sourced else where, or won`t install them. they make their money on parts markup. If they install your parts, they won`t guarante them.

It's amazing the cost for some parts for a shop when compared to list price. I worked at a diesel shop for a while, we had a VW come in that needed a new turbo. Our cost on the turbo was about $350-$400. List was $1600! I don't remember what we charged the customer for the turbo but it was maybe $700-$800 at the very most, plus labor. Thats quite a good investment if we charged list. Quadruple the money. Most parts aren't marked up that much but some sure are.

MB will give me 40-50% off list just for walking in in working jeans and asking for trade price... and that is across the range of parts.

some things you just can't beat going to MB, stuff like wheel nuts, maybe a buck each, ex stock, choice of lengths for each model based on wheel offset and type, can't get that from an OEM.
