W123 300d turbo from 09/'84 is that an '85??

I'm looking to go check one out, but I want to be sure it has the '85 rear ratio setup. I'm only buying the vehicle for the drivetrain, that's why...
Any input much appreciated

Run the VIN; that's about all you can do.

More likely it says "307 963 2, in which case it is a 3.07 differential.

And if it has a 3.07 in it, it's most likely an '84. My car is an '82, but shows a mfg date of 10/81. However, it has the factory om617.952 in it. The .952 was new in '82 for the sedan and coupe.

It could also be that some one swapped a 3.07 in to replace the 2.88.

Matthew,
I think that date you refer to is the date that the car left the production line. It could take a while to be shipped & then it may have sat at the dealer for a while before some one purchased it and it was registered. In Australia, you can sometimes find a brand new car still not sold by the middle of the following year.

in my case, it was a euro delivery...probably picked up as soon as it was off the line.

however, now that I look at my maintenance manual, it was delivered 5 oct 1984 in Sindelfingen. It received it's 1k service in Kundenienst on 20 Oct.

the russian site must have the date wrong.

Thats how my 82 wagon is as well. The wagons got the turbos before the sedans and coupes.

The Russian site uses commonly used European d/m/y format as opposed to the North American m/d/y format, that's why the 10 and 5 are switched out.

^ Correct. Delivery date 05.10.84 = 05-OCT-84 which officially makes your 300D a 1985 MY, Matt.
(Typically, the last quarter of the current calendar is the start of the 1st Q of the succeeding year.)
