Blower Motor Fan Not Working: 1985 w123

It was working fine up until 10 minutes ago. I hit the defrost button and nothing, but I did hear a click noise activating every time I pressed one of the buttons. However no fan. I checked the fuses and they are all good. Any ideas? I need a new fan motor? help me its still January!!!

Brushes wear out on these motors. Try hitting the motor. If the brushes are bad it might jar them functional. There are threads on how to install new brushes. Once you see the price, I doubt you'll want a new motor.

Check for voltage at the fan with the defrost button pushed.

its a 30-45 min job to remove the blower and clean and check it out, stretch out the springs pushing on the brushes

good thing to do if you never have

3 bolts, maby 8mm i forget

and needle nose will be needed

Yup, it's easy to get out. If smacking it gets it to start, you can be pretty sure the problem is the motor, not the controller. My 300D is now on it's third motor.

okay so on the way to work this morning the blower motor started operating. The front defrost button was already depressed and at some point the fan kicked on and started working. Is this the CCU or is this still the actual fan that is broken?

I just went through the blower motor removal and inspection. It does sound like your brushes are on their last leg. I would pull it out and inspect them, it is quite simple.

I would bet it is the blower motor too. If you have never messed with it, now is the time to take it out and have a look. It is easy to remove and easy to repair as stated above. If the brushes look like they have some life left, you can try stretching the springs out a little or putting a "shim" in behind the springs to put more pressure on the brush. This will "buy you some time" until you deal with the brushes (if it is needed). Lots of threads on this topic.

Sometimes when the brushes wear out it'll try and draw more amps to spin it resulting in a blown fuse.
But pull it and check, then inspect the CCU.

Unfortunately, you can't buy just the motor for 83?-85 models anymore. When mine was completely burnt up (term board melted) before this last summer, I couldn't find a good working one at a PNP or online, so I had to buy a whole new unit (squirrel cage, motor & backing plate). Something close to $400... But let me tell you, having A/C in Texas is well worth it to me.
