Timing chain guide pin pulling

I've done some searching and everyone mentions the bolt/socket/washer method but no one seems to be sure of the size bolt. Anyone know what size bolt will fit the internal threads on the pins before I start trying random bolts...

The pins have internal threading that is M6X1. Trying and find the best quality bolt available is advised.

There, I've done it again.

Righto. And you (or maybe it was Tom W.) have also pointed out that there are a number of these elsewhere on the engine that you can use. I did this with my 602... I think it was one of the bolts on the EGR assembly or crossover pipe. No need to go buy one.

So lets say (hypothetically of course) that while using a bolt to pull a pin the bolt broke off in the pin. How would I recover from such a disaster? Keep in mind I don't care about saving the pin, it's bent anyway.

If your pin is bent you better get a very strong 6mm bolt. I believe the strongest 6mm bolt commonly available will be marked 10.9 on the head,i would not start with anything less.
Should you be so unfortunate as to break the bolt the only way is to drill it out ,i which case you will probably end up drilling the pin as well,i hope it goes well for you. Don

If the bolt broke, You could always weld a nut onto the stump with a MIG welder, then weld a new bolt to that....

--Replace the pin with new after of course!

Saves drilling and all the swarf and possibility of trashing the block casting when the drill goes the wrong-way!

I had to do that with a flywheel bolt I broke off, a neighbor helped with his MIG welder, worked very slick.

It depends on which pin, the upper pin or the lower pin, here is some last ditch info on the lower pin

Was that dollar and time you saved not obtaining a high quality bolt really worth it now?

On the 617 I used a tube/bushing on a bolt to pull the upper pin (pretty easy) the lower one was not so easy. Had to make a tool using a real long bolt, washers and some barbell weights to pound with. Essentially a giant custom slide hammer. Worked though! Use lots of penetrant on it and heating the pin can help too.

Thumbs up

Is that pin puller tool not inexpensive anymore?

For the money you are saving on labor by doing it yourself, I would purchase the proper tool. Mine works fantastic.

I once broke off the bolt flush with the pin using a slide hammer. No biggie, sawzall and new pin solved it. Coulda been ugly had it not been an upper and the engine not on a stand

On the top pin Can the plastic bracket for the fan belt tensioner be removed before pulling the pin? I've tried but the pin seems to be larger out in front (maybe it got hit and mushroomed?) Should I just pull the pin through with that bracket in place, putting my bolt tool against the bracket instead of the head?
