hvac blower motor housing

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to remove the blower motor housing from my 83 without taking out the entire system and having to discharge the system?
Andrew

Are you talking about removing the blower motor from the air box? That only takes about 5 minutes including removing passengers kick panel. No draining of anything.

Removing fan from the motor and the motor from the plastic motor housing takes another 5 minutes. If you remove the fan, be sure to mark the fan and the shaft before removing.

If you are removing the entire "air box" that is a different story.

Whew...That is a big project! I'm sure there is some kind of DIY tutorial or DIY links in the Resources section at the top of the page.

Edit: Here is one of the links from the above mentioned area. This shows you how to remove the "air box". This should get you there. Looks like a PITA: http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/W123Evaporator

What rust are you working on? If it is rust under the battery tray than using POR-15 may help. How bad is the rust. Lets see some pictures.
Removing the evaporator box does require recovering the freon and as posted it is a large job. IF you must remove the evap box than there are quite a few things you should do while your in there.

Dave, yes the one who make the post on evap box removal.

this little spot is the only one that is causing me problems. I think i could get it out with a dremel, but welding in the new panel is not going to work....
I think i have to take the hvac out. :-(

While the box is out, consider replacing the evaporator. Also replace all the vacuum elements that are used in the AC system. How's the heater box look? consider it now while it's all out. Replace the evaporator box drain and foam tube just above the glove box.
Rebuild the instrument cluster, check in the rheostat, repaint the dial needles if you want. New tape over the unused bulb holes. A dab of Krazy glue on the odometer gear since it's out.
Check the round AC vents and make sure they are not cracking at the attachment points.
Replace the rubber vacuum tube connectors the rubber gets old and brittle so do it now while you have access.

replace the floor and firewall insulation. original is still available and not too expensive. you can always go with dynamat or something similar if you want but you will lose the kick panel tab holds that come on the originals.

The foam tube directs sample air to the HAVC temp controller.
