Question 84 190D Odometer works on and off

The odometer works on and off. I took the cluster out and at the back of the odmeter there is an black electric box with a 2 pin connector similar to the picture. The speed needle has no problem and is indicating the correct speed.

Is the problem purely mechanical or has something to do with the electric box? If it is mechanical then I will take it apart and follow the posts in this forum to fix it.

BTW: What is the electric box for? I remove it and there is some kind of a coil in there.

Your odometer looks to be more or less the same mechanical model in my W123; both are made by VDO, and both are junk. These odometer problems have been well documented. They use plastic gears that wear out over time. Mine was about 2 miles fast (1 mile reality/2 miles counted) and it turned out that the long white plastic gear was toast. More or less stripped. I grabbed a new odometer from Pick N Pull, matched the mileage on the new one by turning the shaft, used lock tite to fix one of the slipping metal gears, and has been working fine since.

X2 with dan,
The plastic gears will be destroyed. P&P is simplest solution, you can buy new gears if you want.

the black box is the speed sensor for the cruise control.

I didn`t see it for the 190 but this is for the 123. same thing.

When you are at PNP, get a bunch of speedometers for spare parts down the road.
