My W124 needs shocks and struts, but as little as I currently drive it I don't have it on my to-do list....

My son and I recently did shocks on our 240. 'There were some frustrations and it took 3 times longer than we planned, actually had to do the backs one saturday and the fronts the following weekend. Didn't have and couldn't find the all important 12 point thin walled 13(?)mm socket for the fronts, but got those suckers off anyhow with a lot of foul language, PB Blaster and a box wrench. Compressing the backs was the most frustrating, used a bottle jack and a piece of lumber to crank them up. All things considered, the satifaction and cost savings were sure worth it. My indy had quoted us 3.5 hrs labor at 91 bucks an hour.

Thumbs up

You should drive these vehicles for fun and wrench on them as a hobby.

OR !!

Just imagine attempting many repairs that posts here have proven to be truly easy.. as long as you have a good idea of how to do it ...

Would ya rather be using a BS Haynes?? You know "reassembly is just the reverse of taking it apart..."

Like many, many folks Im very appreciative of all the time and effort so many have taken in posting 'here is how to really do it' as opposed to whats in any manual.

Ha ha, I know what you mean. "all you gotta do" is kind of like when the redneck says "hey watch this!". I've been wrenching for more years than I care to think about and I still find a few cuss words necessary to some jobs I have tackled. As a kid working as a professional grease monkey I was the one who would take on the jobs nobody else wanted. I guess I have a natural knack for mechanical stuff. There are a lot of hack mechanics out there and that's the reason I do all my own work.
My car "87 300SDL" has been in a fender bender on the right front at some time in it's life and had a hack job done for repairs. I found missing fender bolts, mis-aligned hood not latching on one side and the front bumper was about to fall off due to loose/missing mounting hardware. I've been slowly fixing her up and she runs great. I need to do the vaccuum pump replacement soon but just have to save money for the $300 part. Hope she doesn't grenade before I can get to it....
Use heat for bolts and nuts with locktight. Stay with it and hang in there.
Many time I've had to back away and cool off then when I returned everything just fell together! Always works out like that.
Good luck.
Steve

I've learned an important lesson over the years. When the wrenching gets tough, there is always a useable tool close at hand, a cup of tea. Put the wrenches down, brew up a cuppa, sip it slowly in an easy chair, and magically the job gets much easier when you return to it.

Just be glad it's your car that's half apart in your driveway and not your dad's coworker's BMW!

For rusted parts a good blast of heat with a torch does wonders. I sometimes follow up with oil after it cools a little. For really stubborn stuff that is being replaced a die grinder/ hacksaw/cutting torch or whatever it takes to cut it off is sometimes the easiest route.

Haha!

What's worse are all of the DIY articles that make R&Rs look SO easy.
When I'm under the car all ready to go BAM the bolt is stuck.
8 hours later I'm exhausted and unable to complete the project.
