Scanner Compatibly Question

I purchased a Actron 9175 scanner for car problems other than my MB's, However I looked under the dash of the 1999 E300D and found a plug avail, but not compatible.

Am I missing as to where to plugin this unit, or is this car MB service tech only.

Searched this subject, but no joy.

Thanks,

Gary

It's an ODBII scanner. Every car since... I think it's maybe 96?... is legally *required* in the US to be compatible with that plug one way or another. No questions asked, no dealer interfaces... it's just required. I'm guessing you've found the wrong plug or else lost an adapter or something that came with the scanner. I don't think you're an idiot, I just think it's got to be something simple like that because the whole point of the USA ODBII system was to completely and totally eliminate the "dealer-only service" problem.

That is exactly what I am thinking, I did locate a plug adjacent to the hood latch with a spring loaded cover, but the pin/plug configuration did not seem to match.
Actually I was pinned close to the garage wall and did not have a great look at this. With the snow drifted against the garage door I did not reposition the car.

Thanks,
Gary

That's odd... I have diagnostic software for my laptop and the adapter fits the under-dash connector. I also have an adapter for the round, 37 pin connector under the hood but it gives the same data.

I will check again after work, I did not want to force the connector yesterday.
The scanner looked to have a keystone shaped plug, ( wider on top, sides slanted in ). The plug under the steering wheel seemed to have oval ends/sides. But my eyes are not getting any better, and so on etc.

Thanks I will check this out again, I will feel like a dunce it this is it...

As I remember, the plug goes in at about a 45 deg angle and it's also upside down. (Wide end down) Oh, and it's covered too..
