84 190d what have i gotten myself into.

the good. 19F car starts on first crank 4 sec into glow cycle.

the bad. turn signals don't work. neither does the horn. nor the tach. noticed that the engine fan was free wheeling. i see there's a fuse that covers a lot of things. it was blown. replaced it. and 3 others.

and the socket for the Hazard switch was pulled apart. reassembled it. when i mashed it got smoke out from under the dash on the pass side. had a wire in wrong spot. redid it. mash button and the seat belt buzzer came on.

what in the world. i think i just wasted a grand on a head ache. really didn't want to spend weeks sorting another car out.

looked further some one had the dash out. this is getting scary.

Cannot offer you anything on the electric. You need the schematic to sort out the wires.

Engine fan free wheeling is OK as it is an electric clutch. It turns on when the coolant temperature reaches a threshold.

Did you replace your ovp relay? Sounds like it's acting up.

Ovp= over voltage

Yep, the fan is normal. My sister's 190E is the same way. Only the 190's were ever sold with that setup. Very odd IMHO.

First, the obvious- you bought a 26 year old car, and didn't expect to spend weekends fixing a bunch of stuff ???

OVP relay: this car does not have one.

Fuses: throw away the ones you did not replace, clean every contact in the fuse box with good contact cleaner, and replace with new copper element fuses.

Fan clutch: you learned from ahkay how it works, instead of just assuming it was broken.

Here's a heads up about the other fan- for the 84-85 2.2L engines, the aux fan (next to the grill) only kicks in when it gets the signal from the temp sensor AND the A/C is engaged (if equipped with it). Crazy but true- I added wiring and a switch in the glove box to overide the factory setup.

In the future, you can expect window regulators to break, door checks to stiffen so much the door won't close (so when you hear noise from them, replace asap), the ignition lock cylinder to wear (the day you have trouble turning it, replace immediately), and likely to need a water pump. I would replace the thermostat unless you know it's close to new. Critical item on your list is to check the ball joints and both flex disks.

Your fun has just begun

I hear you. But check out this before and after 190D.

Before

After

http://s1016.photobucket.com/albums/af288/ah-kay-hk/190D%20NOW/?action=view&current=c886d1bd.pbw

Just fix the basic electric light lights and blinkers. The rest are not necessary for now. As long as it is mechanically sound then you can use it for work. Pace out the other fixes later, 1 per weekend or per month. I can assure you will be very please once it is done.

84 190d

The dash on my 1984 190d looked the very same way. I bought a dash cap and you cannot tell the difference.
