Vacuum Pump Gasket

Just a quick question:

1. Do you put gasket sealant to the gasket of the vacuum pump?
2. Should the lobes in the IP timing wheel(?) be horizontal or vertival?

Well, I don't believe MB calls for any sealer. But, both mating surfaces have to be very clean.

As I remember the "valleys' of the little "rollorcoster' track go vertical, turn the engine clockwise, I use the steering pump bolt.

LOL, you knew I was going to say this...
The FSM specifically forbids using the power steering pump nut to turn the engine... it is a tapered shaft and too much pressure on it can really cause problems later....

I used a razor blade and thought the surfaces were very clean. Still leaked. So, I used a very small amount. No leak. Just my experience though.

Yes, I knew you'd be standing by to jump on that one,
I haven't seen too many posts from folks having problems after using the P/S bolt, and its such a pain to use the crank bolt as is bumping the starter, but you cant be faulted by advising people to "go by the book".

I use Holymar (sp) type. I think I bought it at NAPA. Its a type of fluid or such and not a brand name. I use it not just for sealing, but if I have to take off the gasket again, it usualy just peals off. I forget which way the lobes were. But a made sure, I didn't have to compress the spring in the vacuum pump, in order to get the bolts in place.

I didn't use sealer, just a dry gasket and VERY clean surfaces. I remember having to turn the engine to get it to sit flat. I tried lining everything up prior to turning the engine, but still needed to turn the engine to get it just right.

And, I turned mine from the PS Pump.

If you can't find a value, (what book?) there probably isn't one.
