If this option existed I would have went with that. I think putting in a factory longblock is a tremendous value, since the car cannot be replicated for the cost.
I agree, from my point of view these cars have a replacement value of about $60k (if you can put up with driving a new car), so it's worth putting a little cash into them. Once they reach the bottom of the food train people just run them into the ground. When the supply of cheap cars and junkyard parts is exhausted the same folks will start abusing newer cars.

I've built a few 617's and the last one I did the parts were around $3300 if I remember correctly.

Thank you for all the replies. This is a project and I'm willing to put in a little wrench time. I figure with the cost of the car + a used engine = what I would pay for a running car with similiar miles. The used engine is a gamble but if the company is honest and provides a carfax, my chances for success are greater. You are always going to have problems with a used car, very few people sell cars with NO issues. I keep going back and forth. A used 99 e300d with 125k KBB is about $9600 but people are asking 11-12k for them. In four years and another 100k miles it is going to be worth $4500. Most of the engine failures I've been reading about happen between 200-250k.

My goal for the car is to spend < $4500 which leaves me about $2500 to spend on engine repairs. I have another $1500 in reserve but of course I don't want to spend that. If that gets me 3 years and 100k miles, I think I'm ahead of the game. Ok, I'm rambling now, thanks for listening.

The shop it is located at claims the top end is ok, they recc posishing the crank and replacing all bearings. I know I should start with that but my year, 1995, is a one off and at most the engine from a 96 or 97 might work. I found a very low mileage motor but that won't be around forever. Ah, it's only a car. I'm going to take my time and hopefully with everyone's help, I'll figure it out.

It sounds to me that you're going to be gambling, if you've never heard the donor engine run. I can't tell from what you wrote whether you know or not.

If I were you, money considered, I'd proceed with the donor engine idea, since you already own the '95.

FWIW, I'd be happy to sell you or anyone, my bought new garaged in Texas '99 E300TD with 120K miles for $10K - if I can find a suitable 2008 E320 Bluetec one of these days with low miles, and a rational price, to replace my '99. And this particular '99 E300 needs nothing.
