shifting problem... 300SD

I have got a nice 300SD and am trying to take care of it!

The PO had adjusted the transmission bowden cable to be almost all the way out and my transmission shifts at about 3000 rpm.

Sometimes especially when the engine is cold the car does not want to shift into 4th gear and oscillates between 3rd and 4th. If I put the pedal to the floor and ref the engine up it will shift at high refs.

If I shorted the Bowden cable the oscillations start in the lower gears as well.

I think I need to adjust the modulator and how?

I will check the vacuum but I have to wait for my gauge.

Any thoughts?

Thanks...

Turn in the bowden cable nut, count the turns, and test drive.

Check fluid level as well...Does it slip when it is cold at all, like from a stop?
