Mini Diesel Meet

Diesel Don and I had a mini diesel meet in Rockford, MI this morning. We appreciated our cars each other.

Don drove his 1985 Euro 300TDT and I brought my newly acquired 1987 300TDT. Both cars sound the same at idle and look very similar in the engine bays as well.

I just had the title transferred and was shocked to find out the base price on my 1987 300TDT back in 1987. It was over $42k plus options!

I put in a 20 oz bottle of Techron with 10 gallons of fuel in it this morning. Hope to get it run smoother.

Wait a minute. Was that euro 85 300TD a 123 or 124 chassis. Did it have a 603 engine in it? The two wagons are completely different beasts, body and engine wise (atleast in the US).

Right, they have very different bodies.

The Euro 85 is 123 and the 87 is 124.

What surprised me was that his 85 Euro wagon has a weight over 4,900 lb.

I've got the window sticker for my '87 wagon. Can't recall the exact figure, but it stickered for ~$49K! Only options are leather seating ($1.5K) and third seat ($1.5K). Sunroof is a no charge option as well.

Enjoyed meeting today and comparing the difference between the 85TD and the 87TD. What a nice car you acquired. Too bad we have a Michigan winter descending upon us.

Don:

It was so nice to meet you and I really enjoyed your car (especially its weight!).

I deal with the Michigan winter by

1. use a set of snow tires (on all four wheels).

2. Run the car through touchless car wash once a week (when I buy fuel).

I am seriously thinking about storing my 1887 E320 for the winter as I like this 300TDT so much.

Weight

Are we comparing the same numbers? My 87 300SDL has a "Gross weight" of just under 5000lbs.

I believe that means my car, my self and three passanger averaging 175lbs, about 150lbs of fuel, and 150lbs of bags in trunk are not to exceed 4,950lbs (the max fully loaded weight).

I'm guessing my SDL weighs around 3,900lbs. I'm also guessing the Euro wagon is within +/- 150lbs of the U.S. wagon (or maybe a few lbs more being one is a 123 and one's a 124).
