1981 300D Auto problem?

Hi Folks,

I've recently changed the fluid and filter on my 722.? automatic transmission (gearbox). I had a few problems getting the correct fluid level after doing the following:-

1) Warm up the oil by driving for about 5 miles or so...
2) Drain fluid from pan and torque converter
3) Remove pan / change filter / refit pan

I then followed my Haynes manual advice by re-filling the transmission with 4.8 litres of ATF fluid. (very carefully measured out - this was about the same amount that came out)

Started the engine (box in park)
Went through the gears - got NO DRIVE in any gear.

Went to bed (it had got dark and started to rain)

Following day - same problem.

Fluid level on dip stick was way way over the marks.

Removed 2 litres of fluid.

Fluid level nowhere to be seen on the dip stick but I got drive back

Topped the fluid up to the top mark on the dip stick - after driving and warming it all up again - so in the end I put back about 2 litres into the box!

Everything is now OK

What on earth did I do wrong?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

fluid took awhile to get in the torque converter, perhaps

You did right by measuring what came out

I guess the oil had to go somewhere - and I hope it was the torque converter! At first it seemed like all of it was in the gearbox only (very high dip stick reading - well past the twisted parts)... it stayed there for about 12 hours. In the end draining it and re-filling seemed to fix it.
