Steve,
I wondered when you would next be about! sounds like you have been doing work on your IP.
Attached is the re-installation instructions from the Haynes W/S manual. It appears that the trick is to time the pump using the timing inspection hole not by dribble. The motor should be at 15 degrees AFTER TDC for the governer body mark to line up with the hole left by the timing plug removal.
I think thats how come figures of 24 & 15 are showing up.

If you want any other pages from the WSM let me know by PM.

Best Regards

PS Did you get much rain in that last spell?

I thanks all so much for your help, i have spill timed it at 26 deg. The recommended 24 you guys state is correct and it does seem wise to use the pump and set 15 ATDC for most accurate. I cant seem to veiw the thumb nail here to well as my screen res is to low i will look with another pc as it may be best to re set it.
She goes ok i used 26 deg as i will be going back to veg and it has a lower cetane value. I have diesel in at the moment to be sure the pump has no leaks, dont want MTQ to tell me oh it leake bcause you put vegy in. Ouch though it cost near $80 to fill, i forgotten waht it feels like to pay so much. LOL
She still aint a rocket and does not seem to go any better than b4. good to 140km then is very slow at building more speed but would go more, i guess not much point in finding out as i dont drive faster.

I regret letting it leak so long the veg on the under cartridge is so hard to clean. I tried degreaser and pressure wash but found brake clean is best.

I will need to get a ton of brake clean b4 my next tranni filter change. From what i can work out it takes dextron II, IID or III.

I grabbed a centrifuge for doing my oil, it aint much value my oil was already very clean. The $1800 it cost may have been better spent sent to Haiti.

Have not seen any rain still dry as, from what i can see some of northern SA and eastern states have too much. guess that is how it goes and in the future the differences wil be greater.

I thank you all so much i dont know how i would go without the blessing of you guys in the forum.

If you can exceed 140km/h on a NA, I'd say it's performing to spec. or at least close. Are you near sea-level? If not, subtract 3% for every 1000' of elevation.

I tune IP timing by ear and butt pressure on takeoff from slower speeds.

So that it's not clattering too much, and get maximum push in the pants. If you advance it too much performance goes over the peak and gets slower on take-off.

And I tune ALDA with shimming and black cloud method at full take-off. You don't want too much cloud. Beyond a certain point you just get more black but no more push. Then back off a bit.

Tuned this way, she goes!

Yes i am very close to sea level. I think she would go over the 140Km mark but the increase in speed becomes gradual.

So i guess she is what she should be.

Provided it kicks back it has good punch.

Today though i held it in second and it ran out of legs without much smoke but when held in 3rd it did. I think it must have hit max rpm in second.

I dont understand

Whats ALDA?
Both of my diesels have a little black smoke or better said very dark grey when i really stoke it. This i understand to be what diesel should do. If they aint gettin enough fuel the will blow white smoke when stoked up. My Patrol did this when i first got her no supprise the fuel filter was full of gunk.

A sad think though i finally have her back on the road and today my ac died. Has a leak on the tx valve. AS cars are. 1 headache after another. Well tuesday we will fix it and re gas.

I appreciate your inputs.

soon i will see if i can put pic of my ride in my profile, for an old car i think she is a lookers and is in very close to immaculate condition. People not knowing mercs think she is much younger than she is. I get a chuckle when peole with $60k cars say i must be doing well.

Your car doesn't have an ALDA, those are on turbo engines to hold back fuel enrichment until the boost builds. You have an aneroid, which is there to compensate for higher altitude, reduces fuel at lower barometric pressure (3% for every 1000' of altitude).

I agree that your 2nd gear run hit the governor and cut fuel back = no smoke at max. RPM. Sounds perfect. Under load with the loud-pedal down, normal tune is to see just a little gray smoke, sometimes a black puff if you lift/floor the pedal as the rack damper gets behind, but black smoke is over-fueling which will return a bit more power but at less efficiency and much elevated EGTs.
