Never worked on a 115 240d but on later models, the PS pump adjusts on the main pump bracket. Is the other belt the AC belt? I've seen idler pulley adjustments on 300d ac belts so I bet yours is too.

Not sure about your model, but whatever those belts drive will need to be loosened in order to remove them. No two ways about getting belts on there to go behind belts already there, unless you have Merlin-like abilities. Same thing happened to me in the ol' wagon and dumb luck, being what it is, I just so happened to be turning onto my street when the battery light came on. Clueless, I pulled into the drive, and yup, both belts gone and faint sound of hissing. In the 123, both the PS and A/C belts are in front of the two belts around the alternator/WP/crank pullies, so off they come. If it were me, I would change the oil and filter. If your coolant was boiling for TEN MINUTES? (I've never heard of boilover lasting that long) that is some serious heat. Cheap to change out potentially useless oil.

Alright, I got the belts off. Just had to stare at them long enough for things to click, seems to be how things work for me sometimes. I also drained the oil and am going to replace the filter (btw, are those easy to come by locally, or should I just order them from the site here?). I'm also going to drop the oil pan and check for metal and such.

My valve cover gasket is all leaky as well, so I'm assuming it needs replacing. I'm worried about my cylinder head gasket, does anyone know of a good way to check it's status other than pressurizing the coolant system?

Just put your belt on fill the coolant and start it up. Every few minutes check to see if the level has gone down. If it has fill again until the level stabilizes. Once you have it full just keep an eye on it. If you have a blown head gasket it will create a lot of bubbles in the coolant and after sitting the hoses will be very hard.

Good luck!

Thumbs down Ruh Roh

Complication:

The gear driven adjusting mechanism thingy on the alternator mount seems to be stripped, unless there's some fancy trick to making it catch. Yippee. Kind of hard to set the tension when the bolt just turns. Maybe, that's why the belt blew in the first place, eh?

Those adjusters are one of Mercedes two worst designs. (the other being the frankenstein ac bracket used on 115s and early 123 chassis.

Buying a new bolt and bracket really does not fix it either. They just strip again. Pry out the alternator as best you can and tighten it all down and forget about it!

Red face

Alright folks, after overcoming certain road-blocks, financial and otherwise, I finally got around to refilling the oil as well as the coolant, got the belts on snug, and fired it up. Started pretty quickly after sitting for about a month. Seemed to start running well after about a minute, but then the alternator belt started squealing, so I shut it down to tighten it up and check the coolant while I was at it.

The coolant was lower already, so I added more and whoosh. Out came a good amount of old coolant down below. It seemed to have a vacuum of sorts holding it in, and when I would add some I would hear a bubble popping sound and out it would pour again. So I gave the little hose that connects just to the left of the radiator cap (bypass, I assume) a tug, and up it came all melted off at the lower end. Bollocks. Where does this connect at the other end so that I can replace it? Got any ideas of other things to check in this case? There was no leakage while it was running.

On a related note, is there a resource online or otherwise that maps out the systems of this car? I've used EPC a few times, but it doesn't really show what connects to what and where. I feel like if I could look at maps of the systems (coolant, oil, vacuum, etc.), I would have a much better mental picture of how everything works together and could troubleshoot more easily. Then maybe, just maybe, I might not have to ask you kind folks silly questions.

Okay, so I've done some more research and I'm now wondering if that hose isn't supposed to lead to anything...

Is it just an overflow hose that spits up when the radiator is too full? What concerned me was the melted end.
