300SD Front Spring Shims

Just a quick question:

I'm considering replacing the front spring/shocks on my 82SD...
The EPC list 4 different shims that I can use: 8mm, 13mm, 18mm, 23mm..

Is there anyway, without tearing my setup now apart, to tell what shim I have?

I've always felt that there was too much gap between the tire and fender, so I might shift to a smaller shim..

Yes, if you look at them there are "nipples" or bumps. The number of bumps indicates the pad you have. You may refer to "tits" or "nipples" if you search for further information. Recently went over this on my 300SD.

Would I have to take out the springs to find this out? I would assume so...

Edit: I just posted a link but I'm not sure of the policy of linking to another parts site. It was the photo that I wanted to direct link to, but perhaps you can see the images on one of these peachparts websites.

The tits should be pointing down on the edge of the pads.
You may have to feel for them.

I recently completed the exact scenario.

Get yourself the 8mm spring pads. I switched from the 23mm pads (incorrect for the vehicle) down to the 8mm pads and I'm completely pleased with the results. The huge gap above the tires is gone.
