Mobil 1 15w50 - not diesel rated anymore?
Mobil 1 15w50 - not diesel rated anymore?
It is NOT my intention to start another “oil thread” debate. I’m just curious to know what if anything has changed in regards to Mobil 1’s formulation and if it is still suitable for (older) diesels. I ran out of my old supply with the gold caps. The newer “silver top” 15/50 jugs don’t show the CF rating anymore. They only list gasoline engine service ratings. (I recognize that CF is an older and possibly outdated rating.) However, on Mobil’s website they show a CF rating and mention diesel use. Links: Mobil 1™ 15W-50 15W-50 Synthetic Oil | Mobil 1™ 15W-50

What's the reason to run 15W-50 instead of the recommended 5W-40?

One reason many of us buy other grades is that MB 229.51 spec 5W-40 is often only available at dealers, while other grades are available at Walmart! I use 229.51 5W-40 in our little smart cdi, because that is the recommended oil. Buy it at the dealer (all 3 qts!) So far as I know, MB 229.51 5W-40 is really intended for modern diesels that have particulate filters. Our old diesels will run fine on almost anything! But especially a synthetic like M1 15W-50 or 10W-40 or Turbo-Truck 5W-40 as well as Delvac. At present here in Myrtle Beach, all grades of M1 are priced at $24.95 at Walmart. I have stocked up! For my old diesel, I use Mobil1 Turbo Diesel Truck.

I use the dino/almost synthetic 15w40 or blue/grey 5w40 low buck stuff in the iron diesels, and the full syn stuff with the aluminum headed motors. the soot and leakage just doesn't make economical sense to me...

It is still available, but AFAIK, it is only available in 5-50. A little hard to find.
I use it in the winter to ease hard starting when it's really cold out. In the other months, I run Delo400LE 15/50. Definitely the Mobil 1 is burned a bit more (oil consumption goes up a tiny bit) when I use it in the winter. Sincerely, Robert

That M1 15W50 product has been dumbed down over the past few years. It used to carry some other desirable OE ratings but they no longer show.
FWIW, W*mart carries some excellent API diesel-rated oils incuding:
All these are great all-season/all-climate oils and reasonably priced. There may also be a Castrol 5W40 product, too. And don't overlook the M1 0W40 which carries the MBz OE certification. *new, and I'm not certain how widespread the availability is yet. |

According to their data sheet:
"According to ExxonMobil, Mobil 1 15W-50 is of the following quality level: API CF" I interpret that to mean it's still diesel rated, though CF no longer exists. Sounds like it's still good to use to me. Down here in hell, nothing wrong with running 15w-50

Yeah, that's how I interpret it too.
CF rating (non EGR) is still applicable elsewhere in the world. |

I *think* its becoming clear. Even though Mobil still qualifies it as a CF rated oil, the CF rating is now defunct - so they don't put in on the label itself?
