85 300D... what is this electrical connection?
 

Hey all, just saw this wire/connector just hanging out by the IP. What is it and where does it go??

Probably connects to a temperature sensor in the block near the IP. Look for something screwed into the block with a pin that doesn't have anything attached to it.

Edit: Look in between glow plugs #1 and #2.

There is nothing between glow plugs 1 and 2. Hmmm, looking at this thing, it looks like it would connect to glow plug #2. Does anyone know if that's the case?

I just looked at my 85, and there are 2 brass looking fittings screwed into the block between the first and second GP, and between the second and third GP.
there is a temperature sensor screwed into these fittings. there is a wire connector connected to each one. one is the coolant temp and the other one is either to tell the blower motor not to turn on until the coolant reaches a certain temp. Or it is for the GP relay, to tell it how long to keep the plugs on.

Does your temp gauge work?

My temp. gauge does indeed work. I really only see the one sensor between GP 2 and 3. Could you possibly take a picture of this for me?

There are two temp sensors. You are missing the first Temperature sensor (#83 on the diagram and is most forward to the front of the engine) is for the Control Unit (#80) for emissions control. The second unit is for the GP relay and temp gauge.

Thanks so much for the photos. Unfortunately for me, the whole thing is gone on my car. Here is a photo of my car. What part would I need for this and would it just be as simple as unscrewing what is there right now and screwing in the new one?

Also, how will not having this sensor affect my car?

Without it, your emissions control function will not be working. No real effect if your vacuum lines are sealed. So it will be to your advantage to delete the EGR, ARV and a related vacuum you were inquiring about earlier ( point of reference. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=271702)

... if that sensor is not there, it's likely your motor was changed at some point... does your tach work? the 85 picks up the rpm signal is a different location than the previous years... so I'd bet not.
if i'm right, you have an older motor in your car, and are just a tad lower in HP than you should have.

My tach doesn't work most of the time, but has kicked in a couple times. And.... there is no tach amp like on the older models.

I'm trying to figure this all out too.... it seems like maybe the engine was replaced at some point because there is a mileage discrepancy in some paper work I was just looking at. But.... how would the tach work sometimes if there is no older style tach amp.

I do have a pre-85 air cleaner housing, but I can say that was replaced by the last owner and I have the paperwork showing the moron that installed it.

Anyone have any tips on how I can figure out if the engine is indeed an 85???

Yep. i swapped a 1980 motor into a 1981. The 1980 motor didn't have the extra temp sensor. Ran fine though. I never worried about it.

Not sure I'm following all the advice in this thread, but on an 85, there is an electronic component to the IP. Is this the wire for that electronic component in or on the IP itself and not the block?

I can see the wire going to the IP. This is for sure the one to the temp. sender between GP 1 and 2.
