'86 300SDL smokes, burns 1 quart every 200 miles

I aquired an '86 300SDL this past summer for the very fair price of free. When I got it, it smoked just a bit, and took a quart of oil ~600 miles. I was getting 28.7mpg highway when I got it. It has progressively gotten worse. I'm now putting in a quart every 200 miles (twice a week!) and she's averaging ~23mpg on the highway. Smoke is worst on cold start. I don't see much while cruising, but there's nice big billowing clouds when I accelerate. When I pull the oil cap, there is no smoke that comes out, so I think that would eliminate blow-by. Also, the "crossover" pipe that goes between the turbo and intake manifold has a slight black seepage around the gaskets, maybe pointing to the turbo burning oil.

The car has 84,500 original miles on it. Where should I start to diagnose this? Fuel filters are less than 2k miles old.

I do not know which engine your car has...so I am just being generic on this...
The ' smokes worse on cold starts' is typical of Valve Stem Seals being worn...
On our 617,616 engines this is a relatively cheap thing to fix but a hassle ( IMHO ) ... but something a novice can do if careful and reading the FSM as you go.
Since it almost certainly needs those... I would suggest doing them first...because as they get really worn over the years the other symptoms of oil usage can flow from that...
So take out that possibility and then check your consumption..
My 240 used a lot of oil when I got it... but things like not putting a new copper washer on the drain plug and other sundry small leaks made it look like it was on its final leg... so be sure to check for leaks in addition to what you can figure is being burned...

If the milage is accurate and you are sure it is. Pull the number one injector . When spinning the engine over does oil spray come out? The oil passage between the number one cylinder and the oil feed to the head is comprimised by a failed head gasket.

Even at higher milage this is a possibility. Also the turbo bearing seals are another. Both are worth checking out. On occassion you will see a little evidence of the head gasket being bad if there is some oil getting by the manifold gasket as a seepage in the number one area. This will not always occur but can.

At one quart every 200 miles, oil from the turbo will be obvious in the intake.

Pull the crossover pipe and look down at the outlet pipe for the turbo. If it's wet with oil, you most likely found your culprit.

If you really want confirmation, start the engine with the crossover pipe removed.........oil should pool at the outlet of the turbo and there will be no smoke while the engine is running.

Sounds exactly like what my SDL was doing over the summer and that was the turbo. The only thing that makes me second guess is your low mileage. Do you still have a trap oxidizer? If so they have been known to throw chunks into the turbo and accelerate its failure. This is the trap oxidizer, after learning of the problem MB recalled them and replaced them with a pipe. Look above the exhaust manifold, if you have the trap I'd talk to Mercedes, they have been known to replace it and the turbo free of charge even into recent years.

The '86 has the om603 in it.

I want one of those cars, but I do not have any spare change to go get one...

I know this is an old thread but... I'm the OP so it's ok.

I got rid of this car a year or so ago (gave it to my mother in law because her 240d was dying). Last night, my mother in law called me and told me I can have it back. It's more or less in the exact same condition that I gave it to her in. Brought it to work and put it up on the lift this morning, the turbo is SOAKED in oil. Is there anything that would cause it to leak oil aside from just seals in the turbo being shot? Its leaking AND burning.

I also found the fuel return lines between the injectors dry-rotted and seeping fuel, so I swapped them out with fresh rubber.

Thanks in advance guys/gals!

With that kind of low mileage it seems like it's worth the investment to get it fixed....if the rest of the car is in good shape.

Reading this thread makes me wonder whether you're at high risk of a runaway diesel situation, where the oil that the turbo is leaking starts feeding into the intake manifold.

Oh yes, I'm definitely fixing it. The car is an 86, my fiancé's grandfather bought it in 87, and gave it to me in 2009. I gave it to my fiancé's mother in 2010, and she gave it back to me yesterday.

I'm confused on what turbo us supposed to be in my car. Is it a Garrett? Or a KKK K24?

If the Oil Inlet Line is a Steel Tubing they have been Know to Crack and it is ofter just past the Casting where the Oil enters the Turbo.
Cleaning it of and running the Engine and you will eventually see the Leak.

Your car will have either a KKK or a garret. You can tell by the wastegate, but on the conpressor housing it will either have the KKK triangle on it or garret will be cast on it. Post a picture.

OM603s early on came with either. Ive owned 87 300ds with both.

Trap Oxidizer Replacement

Mercedes has traditionally covered the cost of "Trap" under "GoodWill" A.K.A.
"We Goofed!" (Or Silent ReCall)

When they replace the "Trap" they ALSO put a NEW TURBOCHARGER on !
(FREE,FREE,FREE !)

[It's not unheard of to also be "Gifted" with a complete New Exhaust system.]

SO,BY ALL MEANS,Investigate and Answer reply #5 !!!!
