I found that as long as that support bracket is bolted up first when installing the new starter that job is much easier. Be careful not to cross thread the bolts when reinstalling.
Yeah when I changed the slave on my 240 I remember it being a little snug underneath.

Since this car isn't running to get it on ramps is there anywhere safe to put jackstands once raised ?

Another question : any way to lube the starter on the car ?

Thanks for the replies!

My 300SD has jack pads on it. That's where I put my stands, though that was an assumption. The manual may have better info. That's where I'd start if I were you.

I think that the starter on the 240 is easier to get to from the top than the bottom.

I think if I didn't futz around with messed up starter bolts the whole job would have been done in less than an hour including time to get it on jacks.

The starter in the car didn't have the support bracket. The threads on the bolts and starter were all fudged up, making for a stressful and tedious process trying to get them threaded again. After 3 hours of unsuccessful threading I got new bolts, a new starter and a support bracket. The job was done in minutes.

This was all done when I put a new transmission in the car. It was the only thing that held me up the entire time. How frustrating..

Yes, the starter is easier from the top on a 240d...
just be sure the wires are held away from the hole you are going to bring it up through..
and you have to turn it carefully to come straight up...
Brian and I have talked about the problem with properly jacking and keeping our MB's in the air to work on them... if you use the jack holes it is very hard to get up close enough with what the FSM calls for under the jacking pads...
I would suggest using a soft ( pine for instance ) between the jack and the third member IF you decide to use that to jack with...

Well I checked the starter its new as well. engaged and disengaged fine. I also pulled the injectors and glow plugs. Injectors were covered in carbon glow plugs were bent showing flat spots/marking at tip. What would cause that??

I pulled the oil filter and oh no!! some one dropped a bag of glitter in it . All of the particles I removed stuck to a magnet

Another one bites the dust !!! It was a new engine thats whats sad!

Is it easier to pull the engine alone or with the transmission? I guess removing the oil pan in the car is out of the question.

lethermang and tr1cky thanks for the jack info.

I will post findings

Bummer.
Still, may not be totally destroyed. It all depends on the source of the manetic glitter.

When you say it was a new engine, what do you mean? New as in a crate engine from MB, or new as in rebuild by someone you don't know?

I ask because I had a neighbor many years ago who wanted me to "help rebuild" the engine for his Opel GT. What he had was a box of mismatched used parts, including pistons, individual rings, bearing half shells, cam followers etc. even gaskets!

I backed away from the project.

Maybe I'm a dreamer....but I'm not the only one... oops, think I'm flashing back to a song!

As the PO kept great records perhaps they have docs on the rebuild? Maybe even under warranty based on mileage??

Hey, may be worth a phone call...
